Lance and a few others know that I'm a Cubs fan. I rarely post in other
teams' forums, but since my questions are about one of yours, I'll post them
here.

When Rick Ankiel came up, I felt that he would not only be Rookie of the
Year, but was perhaps the next great National League pitcher. How wrong I
was. What happened? I know he ran into big-time control problems, and he
was sent down to get his act together. He never regained it, did he? What
happened? Was it his arm, or was it his head?

Now that he is coming up the Cards as a position player, does he have a
chance to be a decent major league outfielder? On the surface, his numbers
don't look very impressive.

Tony screwed him up. He has a way with young pitchers, which is why the
Cardinals don't have many. He gave him a surprise start in the playoffs,
supposedly to keep the pressure on him, but apparently it backfired, and he
was pretty much finished after that. (Not that Ankiel's pitching psyche
wasn't fragile to begin with, but that broke him, I guess)

He's hit a lot of home runs in the minors this year. 32, and is apparently
good defensively. Our RF had a boneheaded misplay in the field lastnight,
which make have hastened this move.

His head. He had the arm to become the next Steve Carlton. He
contracted a bad case of Steve Blass disease, though, and never could
recover. Then, in the minor leagues afterward, he hurt his arm, had
surgery and that pretty well sealed his fate as a pitcher.

270/316/570 at Memphis with 31 homeruns in 414 PA. That's nothing to
sneeze at. Remember, he played his first season as a position player
in 2005, splitting the season between Low A and AA. He then missed
all of 2006. This is the first year when he's played more than 100
games, so it's not surprising that his pitch selection skills are
poor.
