5 years 50 million????
C ya Pudge

With deadline looming, Pudge talks stall

By Jayson Stark
ESPN.com

The odds of Pudge Rodriguez returning to the Marlins took a drastic turn for
the worse Friday.

Rodriguez and Scott Boras held a conference call with the Marlins front
office -- owner Jeffrey Loria, president David Samson and general manager
Larry Beinfest -- and came away so far apart on dollars and philosophy, it's
possible they may not speak again before the Marlins lose the right to
negotiate with Pudge on Sunday night at midnight.

During the call, according to sources with knowledge of the session,
Rodriguez told the Marlins that not only would he not accept a hometown
discount, he won't sign unless he gets a raise over the $10 million he made
this past season.

The Marlins have offered him a two-year contract guaranteeing him
approximately $15 million. Boras hasn't countered that offer. But Rodriguez
and Boras have been telling teams they're looking for a five-year deal for
more than $10 million a year.

Rodriguez's contract stipulates that the Marlins can't offer him
arbitration. So if they don't reach an agreement by 11:59 p.m. Sunday, they
lose the right to re-sign him at any point before May 1.

Hope management makes the effort to keep Pudge. He was, by far, their MVP
last year.

More than 50 million. This guy is going to get rejected nasty at the door by
all the other teams. The only other team that would probably be willing to
spend that money would be LA Dodgers, but I seriously don't see anyone
offering Pudge a 5 year deal for over $50 million. I don't see any teams
ready to give him $40 million over the same amount of time! He's going to
get rejected like he did last year, he's going to sign a one or two year
tender with the Marlins. If the Fish get their stadium, then they may be
willing to offer him another contract, only longer, which will allow him to
finish his career.

If Texas clears up room by moving A-Rod, they could bring back Pudge, but
that would be counterproductive, because they need to get pitching, not more
overpriced players. Any way you look at it, he isn't going anywhere. He
might think he had a season and post-season worth those numbers, but
catchers aren't very durable and he's not in his 20s anymore. Pudge is going
to come back, a bit humiliated after all of this, and he's going to play
even better. If he doesn't get his 20 million dollar a year contract, he's
going to hit 50 HRs... at least I hope. Wink

I don't think anybody is worth 10 mil a year, but......

They offered Pudge 3 years at $20 mil. That's less than 7 mil per
year, while they are paying Lowell 8 mil per year. So you can't blame
him for feeling a bit pissed.

Of course, Lowell's deal is dependent on the team getting a new
stadium deal in place by next Nov. 1. And believe me, that's not
going to happen.

Pudge made counter late last night. From what I heard the counter was 3
years $27 million. Also was stipulated Marlins take it or leave it.

Seriously, may have been what I heard through the grapevine from my friends
in the right places, but why not accept that? If the Marlins keep the team
fairly intact, attendance WILL increase this year. And they will never get
the new ball park if they can't put a winning team on the field.

To me Pudge is worth even $10 mil a year. HE is the one who works best with
the pitchers and can really help the pitching coach without the pitching
coach making a conference. Pudge is so much help to the pitchers. And he
is best guy to protect Lowell in the batting order. Without Pudge we will
have to go after not only a catcher but a power hitter. Not many catchers
fill that bill, so that means have to trade for 2 guys, and at this point
that means giving up Encarnacion, Redman or Pavano, and some prospects. Of
the 2 pitchers, I prefer to keep Pavano.

Besides, if the Marlins don't divy up, who will be our catcher? Castro?
Aint he behind bars by now? They'll have to trade off some folks to get
another catcher, period.

I have heard the Marlins already are shopping around for a catcher. So it
sounds to me that they won't accept Pudges counter.

I was really hoping to keep Pudge and trade off Lowell. pudge is much more
valuable in my opinion. I hate to see Pudge go. He was perfect for the
Marlins and worked so well with the pitchers.

Why wouldnt we or anyone else offer $10 mil a year? He is probably the best
overall catcher in MLB. Piazza isn't what he used to be. Pudge was #1
catcher last year in my opinion. Lopez made a case to be #1 but I think he
just had a career year and he'll fall off next year.

I read a Peter Gammons article on ESPN saying that most MLB teams are going
into a recession mentality. Basically, teams are going to try to spend
smarter than they have in previous years. This is why the Mets didn't try to
offer Castillo a bigger contract than what they normally offer to guys like
Roberto Alomar and Mo Vaughn.

The problem with Pudge is his age. He's 33. If he was 25, he'd be getting a
gigantic contract. If he was 27, he'd probably get a pretty big contract. If
he was 30, he'd get a decent sized contract, probably 10 million or a little
more. At 33, he does not have many years ahead of him, especially at the
catcher position which really eats away at your knees and is very dangerous
to play (with all the wild pitches that get thrown his way). Pudge is a
consistent hitter, but not a great hitter. He will not have a 40 or 50 home
run year. He didn't even get to 30 last year.

Another problem is that the high payroll teams aren't looking for catchers
or are looking elsewhere (in the case of the Orioles: Javy Lopez). That
leaves teams with low payrolls.

If he gets a big payday, that'd be great for him, but I don't see that
happening this year. It's a problem of other team's interests and there was
no team that was actively pursuing Pudge. I could be wrong and he might get
an even bigger contract, but if this was the case, he probably would have
already signed one. I blame Scott Boras for being an idiot and not doing his
job. Agents should look at interest around the league and try to work to get
his client the most money possible not what his client is worth. This is how
A-Rod got $25 million a year at Texas (more than what he's worth) and how
Vlad Guerrero is going to end up with a very nice contract at the end of the
day. Boras is looking to get $15 million a year for Kevin Millwood. K-Mill
is a very good pitcher, but he's not an ace.

I think Pudge is looking for longterm more than the actual dollars.
