I remember watching TSN about 5 years ago, but not quite sure on the date.
Anyhow, there was a lot of writeup in the newspapers and in "Baseball
weekly" about how the owners were losing their shirts. A rep. from the
Expos, who was probably Loria announced the Expos were in the black by some
15 million dollars. This really shocked the Toronto newspapers.
Anyways, I don't want to sound like I am refuting the earlier post about
Loria wanting to get a 7 figure bonus for showing numbers in the black. But
I do have some doubt about this... mostly because it is soooooo easy for
accountants to manipulate the figures and show any kind of profit or loss.
This is also why I always cringe when the usual ignorant Sports media, not
wanting to offend the masses by treating them with intelligence, refuse to
debate with the owners on how they arrive at their huge losses.
I took an accounting course in college and I was lucky to have an accounting
teacher named Al Rosen. (who occassionally appears on ROB tv). Anyways, he
simplified it for us but explained just how easy it is for baseball owners
and sports owners in general to cook the books.
I have my own theories about Loria and Major League Baseball simply didn't
want the Expos to win. Conspiracy theory maybe.
