Rebuffed in attempts to trade Sidney Ponson, the Cardinals are
expected to officially part ways today with the pitcher.

Ponson, designated for assignment Friday hours after making a quality
start in a loss against the Houston Astros, is due to clear release
waivers this afternoon, according to sources. Any team willing to
assume the remainder of the righthander's guaranteed $1 million salary
plus a potential $1.5 million in appearance incentives may claim him;
Ponson retains the right to reject any claim and become a free agent.

What I don't understand is why they got Jeff Weaver over Ponson? Sounds
like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Did Kid Sid do something
stupid in St. Louis too?

Ponson reportedly was not working hard to stay in shape and it was affecting
his ability to pitch deep into a game. Whereas Weaver can be counted on for
200+ innings/season, Ponson was going to be lucky to pitch 150 this year.
LaRussa/Duncan need the starters to eat innings for the bullpen to be fresh
and effective. Also, Weaver could be seen a possible replacement for Suppan.

I could never understand why he got the #5 spot instead of Reyes in the
first place. He was never all that great of a pitcher...

If you can't guess, I'm doing the Happy Yankee Hater Dance.

Though I could go up to NYC and knock back a couple of 9 buck brews
with Sid...
