Hi Billy, I get up to the Burgh several times a year now that I've moved away.
From experience . . .
The Hilton is generally my first choice. It is a great location and an easy
walk. FYI, if you park in the lot across the street, you'll get hit for about
$20/day and more if you valet park.
When you pick a game weekend, you'd do well to price shop on Travelocity or
Expedia. Sometimes, the Hilton's room rates are in the $130 - $160 range for a
weekend, if they're hosting a meeting or if there is an event like the arts
festival (you ought to be able to get $119 or so on a weekend when nothing else
is happening in town).
I've sometimes found that when the Hilton is expensive or booked, the Westin,
which is at the other end of Liberty Avenue in the 1000 block is cheaper. Some
of the ball teams stay there also. It is a much newer hotel. The William Penn
is near the center of the downtown and their rates are sometimes cheaper. Oh,
and there is a Sheraton across the Mon river. I've always found their rates to
be the highest and it is too far to walk. The upside is that the Gateway
Clipper fleet runs shuttle boats to the ballpark. It is a nice and different
way to get to the game.
Frankly, unless you have some disability or are out of condition totally,
almost any hotel in the immediate downtown area of Pittsburgh is within walking
distance. (By the immediate downtown, I mean from the Point up to about Grant
Street.) Hope this helps. Have a great trip, Jay in NoVA
