Should this guy be even playing against right handers?

..223 / .257 / .350 with a K every 4 AB.

Hope this improves with age or this may be another bad contract since you
get the RHP on most nights.

Actually, I think he's about on pace for what he did last year and I agree
on the defense, but I don't think he should be in the middle of the order
against righties.

Yeah, that might be true, but then we have a manager who continues to bat
Corey Patterson at the top of the order so I'm not holding my breath.

Phillips had a really nice season last year, but let's not go nuts -
Utley missed a month of the season and was *still* roughly 30 runs more
valuable than Phillips offensively. You *might* get Phillips as 30 runs
better defensively last year than Uggla or Weeks if you ignore the
numbers and squint a bit, but Utley is also a premier defensive player.

I agree, there's no doubt that Utley is the premier player at the position,
but that's also why he's the highest-paid at the position currently. My
point was that relative to other guys of his caliber Brandon Phillips'
contract isn't that outrageous at all. I brought up Utley merely as a
comparison since he's the highest-paid. If Phillips was making anywhere
near Utley money then I'd have agreed that Brandon's contract might go down
as a bad contract. My point was that Phillips is only making half of what
Utley does yet he still puts up pretty good numbers offensively and is
really really close to Utley defensively.

I got the point, I'm just a bit of a nitpicker! Mainly because of the
way usenet works (or used to, traffic is a fraction of what it used to
be in the baseball newsgroups), it's usually a good idea to nitpick
politely before someone trolls in and nitpicks not-so-politely.
