Nick Blackburn, RHP, Rochester Red Wings, 25 years old.

At Rochester this year.

W-L IP ERA WHIP
6-1 71.1 1.77 0.95

In a recent six game stretch, from June 3rd through July 3rd, Nick was
6-0, pitched 46 innings and ALLOWED ONE EARNED RUN.

Let that sink in.

He allowed one earned run in 46 innings pitched. WOW!

He's not a strike out pitcher, having 37 SO's in 71.1 IP. I wonder
what his best pitch is?

What about Slowey....think he's coming back any time soon?

It *is* the minors, but still a pretty impressive stretch.

He must be able to mix up a couple decent pitches to be
able to go 46 innings with only one earned run, especially if
he's not getting that many strikeouts. He must also be able
to disguise his pitches pretty well, which is half the battle, IMO.

Give him a shot and move Boof to middle relief? It would be interesting
to see what he can do in the big leagues. Then again Slowey was a AAA stud.

It's already been remarked that Boof seems to have trouble going
deep into games - I looked at Yahoo's summary of the last 10 games and
the pattern has been disturbing in innings 6 and 7 - but what has not
received notice is that in those 10 games he also gave up 6 first-inning
runs. When you bring someone in from the bullpen you hope to have
him firing on all cylinders right from the start. It's tough finding
the right role for a guy whose best innings are only 2-3-4.

No doubt the braintrust, particularly the pitching coach, is working
on correcting this problem, since statistically he's tied for being
their second best starter this year. Different/better pacing? Digging
out the old book titled Pitching In A Pinch? Smile

Which really is saying all we have is Santana as a quality starter.
