<<Bring back Ellsbury, a better hitter and fielder. >>
The biggest problem with Pena is that his contractual situation prevents him
from being sent down to the minors to play every day, see lots of pitches,
field lots of fly balls and, basically, learn how to play the game. So what
do people want to do? Bring up Ellsbury, a player with great skills and
lots of potential, so he can sit on a major league bench and not get his
needed experience and probably turn into the next Wily Mo Pena. Here's a
better idea: give the guy more than a month in Triple-A so that maybe he
won't turn into the disappointment that Wily Mo has become.
The best thing for the Sox and for Pena would be for him to be traded for
some prospects to a weak team that would have no choice but to play him
every day. Then maybe he'd get the on the job training that he can't
otherwise get. There's even a chance he'd get enough playing time to start
to live up to his potential. Eventually he might become a good enough power
hitter that in a year or two or three people here would be slamming Theo for
getting rid of him.
