He has the most fascinating biography of anyone in the system.
Parents were Charles Manson's wardens at Johnny Cash's favorite
prison. Coached by Luis Tiant at the great baseball factory known as
the Savannah College of Design. Signed by Boston as an undrafted free
agent--on El Tiante's recommendation--and throws 95 MPH heat. Team
isn't impressed and asks Zink to become a knuckleballer. Next thing
you know, he's on Baseball Prospectus' Top 50 prospects list, and the
estimable Eric M. Van is waxing poetic about Zink on SOSH.
As a pitcher? Pass. Like many knuckleballers, Zink's maddeningly
inconsistent. His K/BB ratios are atrocious, and he seems to have
benefited from great run support this year, giving him a misleading
record. Zink could go on a hot streak, a la Wakefield in 1992 or
1995, but barring that, I wouldn't really consider him a prospect.
Though it's hard not to root for a kid like Charlie.
