FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/specials/giants/bonds/apr01.html

A.P., San Francisco, CA

Sources close to Major League Baseball home run king Barry Bonds have
indicated that he has agreed to a 5 year, $50 million contract with
the Yokumiri Giants. The aging star stated that he was tired of the
undeserved negative press he has been receiving in the United States,
and he "just wants to play the game I love so much, and hang out with
some enthusiastic kids in the clubhouse". He further stated that
"with all the legal issues, it makes sense for me to leave the country
and live overseas for a while". He smiled broadly when the $50
million contract was mentioned, but said the money had nothing to do
with the deal. "I just love the game", he said, "and I want to wear
the Giants' uniform".

Bond's Godfather, beloved former SF Giant and Hall-of-Famer Willie
Mays, also signed, saying he was glad to be able to step back into the
cleats and play ball. "Say HEY! Let's play two!" he was heard
saying. He also stated that he was going to pass Bonds on the
all-time home list, "if it's the last thing I do".

With Bonds in left field and Mays in center, Yokomuri has a formidable
if stationary outfield. They've tried to fill the obvious gap in right
field. Sources say the Yokumiri Giants also pursued
former HOF RHP Gaylord Perry, outstanding right-fielder/first baseman
Stan Musial, and former home-run king Hank Aaron. All declined
contracts.

When asked what he thinks he can contribute to his new team, Bonds
replied "I think I can go 30-30, and maybe pick up 100 rbi's. I mean
their ballparks are small and the bases are closer together, from what
I've heard. And when I'm not in the game, I'll sell autographs and
teriyaki chicken and stuff."

Yokumiri coach Doyou Buyit said he'll bat third and Bonds cleanup.
That way, RH hitting Mays gets more at bats, has a power hitting lefty
behind him for protection, and won't be slowed down by Bonds on the
base paths.

Bonds will apparently get to wear his old number "25" for the
remainder of his career. But after donning the jersey for the press
photos, he tried to put on a Yokomri Giants cap. Needless to say, it
didn't fit. It wasn't even close.
