The Orioles on Monday fired Single-A Aberdeen manager Andy Etchebarren, who had coached or managed in the organization for the past 15 seasons after a successful playing career with the club.

Etchebarren managed the IronBirds for three seasons, compiling a 102-124 record. Etchebarren, who has managed in the Orioles system at every level, is the fourth minor league coach or manager the Orioles have let go in the past couple of months.

Minor league pitching coordinator Doc Watson, roving infield and base-running instructor Tom Lawless and Double-A Bowie manager Bien Figueroa also were not retained.

"I'm very disappointed, very hurt," said Etchebarren, who played 11 1/2 of his 15 major league seasons with the Orioles and was a member of four pennant-winning teams. "I signed with the Orioles in 1961 ... and I thought I'd quit as an Oriole, but I guess not. I went to the organizational meetings and everything else and gave my reports. It came as a shock."

Asked whether he was given a reason for his dismissal, Etchebarren said: "Not really."

Orioles minor league director David Stockstill did not return a call last night seeking comment.

"I love baseball, I love the Orioles, I love the kids that I had in Aberdeen," Etchebarren said. "There's nothing I didn't enjoy about it. I just have to go forward. It's part of life. God opens and closes doors for you. I just wish he hadn't closed this one."

The hiring front
Oneri Fleita and Mike Radcliff, the vice presidents of personnel for the Chicago Cubs and Minnesota Twins, respectively, were being considered for an executive position under Orioles president of baseball operations Andy MacPhail.

However, promotions for both have all but taken them out of the running.

MacPhail said Monday that he hasn't begun the interview process and doesn't expect to make a hire any earlier than the general manager meetings, which are the first week in November.

Among the candidates are Larry Corrigan, an assistant to the GM in Minnesota; Bill Harford, a Cubs scout who also has served as director of player development and farm director in the organization; and former Colorado Rockies GM Bob Gebhard.

Walker backs Millar
Orioles reliever Jamie Walker said he feels people are just trying to "stir the pot" with the criticism of teammate Kevin Millar , who has been under fire for throwing out the first pitch Sunday before the Boston Red Sox's victory in Game 7 of the American League Championship Series.

"If it was different people, then you can question it, but Millar is a good teammate," Walker said. "He's a big baseball fan, he plays the game hard, he prepares himself. That's all you can ask for."

Around the horn
The Orioles have 10 days after the end of the World Series to decide whether to exercise the 2008 option for Kris Benson, but they likely won't take that long to inform the pitcher, who missed all of the 2007 season after shoulder surgery, that they won't be picking up the option. Benson will become a free agent. ... Former Orioles catcher Chris Hoiles remains a candidate to become the team's first base coach.

Rays Claim LHP Birkins From Orioles

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -The Tampa Bay Devil Rays claimed left-hander Kurt Birkins off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles and designated catcher Raul Casanova for assignment on Monday.

Birkins split last season between the Orioles and Triple-A Norfolk, starting two of 19 games he appeared in for Baltimore. The 27-year-old was 1-2 with an 8.13 ERA and made his first major league start at Tropicana Field on Sept. 3.

Reports: Orioles might hire Revs' manager Hoiles

Oct 26, 2007 — According to reports in The Baltimore Sun this week, York Revolution manager Chris Hoiles is a candidate to become the Baltimore Orioles' first-base coach in 2008.
The Orioles are still in the process of putting together next year's coaching staff that will work under manager Dave Trembley. Hoiles, who played for the Orioles from 1989 to 1998, would seem to be a good fit.

Hoiles managed the York Revolution during their inaugural season and signed a one-year contract to return to the Revs in 2008 in mid-September.

At that time, Revs general manager Matt O'Brien said of Hoiles: “For a first-year manager on an expansion team, he did an amazing job of getting 24 players to play as a team. To do that with the scheduling changes we had and the turnover - remember, we led the league in signed players - was amazing.”

Birkins was pretty bad in Baltimore this year, but it was limited innings and almost always as a reliever. In the minors he has always been a starter, with a career ERA of 3.78. Last year in Norfolk he was 8-4, 3.12 ERA in 19 starts. His K:BB ratio was 2.5:1, which really, is pretty good. Is he the next John Maine? I doubt it. Can he be a servicable lefty started at the back of the rotation? Probably.

He's 27 already and doesn't have amazing stuff. Still, he's a lefty who's done reasonably well moving through the minors one level at a time. You have to wonder why the Orioles in 2006 saw him as a lefty specialist when he was a starter his entire minor league career. Then it's more curious why, after targeting him in the pen, they sent him to Norfolk in 2007 to continue life as a starter.

Because they have no direction? Because they don't have any idea what they're doing? Because they're stupid?

These days, 27 is not old. Birkins performed well at Triple-A. If he's good enough to make all those starts and pitch to a 3.07 ERA, what's the sense of not protecting him now? Are they still operating under the delusion that they have all this young pitching? If so, then just where was that pitching depth in September? And what's going to change next year? Their pitching staff is very thin. Are they once again counting on no injuries in 2008? Are they counting on Garrett Olson and that 7.79 ERA? Are they bringing back the immortal Kris Benson? I'd like some answers, please.
