The 1972 Cincinnati Reds were one of the greatest teams of all-time.
Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, Dave Concepcion, and
a solid rotation and outstanding bullpen... The A's were without
Reggie Jackson, who pulled a hamstring stealing home for the pennant
clinching run vs. Detroit in the ALCS. Somehow, with all their
victories decided by 1 run, the A's won the series. While the heroics
of Gene Tenace and Joe Rudi are pretty vivid memories, nothing
compares to the bottom of the 9th inning of game 4... With the Reds
leading 2-1, Williams sent up THREE pinch-hitters, Gonzalo Marquez,
Don Mincher, and Angel Mangual (remember them?), and _all_ of them
singled to produce the come from behind win. Factoring in decisions
like using backup catcher Gene Tenace in place of starter Dave Duncan,
closing game 1 with 2+ innings from Vida Blue, and of course the
famous fake intentional walk of Johnny Bench, Dick Williams shined in
this series like no other manager ever has. He deserves to be in the
HOF, no freaking doubt about it.
