Dick Williams will go in with the A's logo. God bless him!

Nic, we disagree. It's all too easy for an old-time A's fan to
remember how Williams and Finley ruined the pitching staff of an
excellent 1971 A's team. (I believe that team still holds the record
for road-game wins, astounding in the American League where clubs are
frequently built around freak ballparks.)

Remember the third and last game of the 1971 ALCS? The A's had to
start their long reliever, because no starters were left. Vida Blue is
on the hook in the record books for "losing" the first game, 5-3, but
it was lost by Williams, who put too great a burden on the rookie--
seeming to demand a shut-out or near shut-out pitching performance and
also requiring a perfect suicide squeeze from Blue, with a slow ice-
truck, Dave Duncan, on third. Who can ever forget the horror of that
second inning in Baltimore when the A's had Dave McNally on the ropes
with three extra-base hits in a row, ready to get into the hittable
Orioles' bullpen, when Williams got ultra-defensive.

Some more horror to think about in future years: LaRussa will almost
certainly follow Williams into the Hall of Fame under the current 3-
board stacking of voters, despite every A's fan's knowledge that
LaRussa's incompetence blew the great Levi Strauss A's dynasty from
the World Series of 1988 (to a weak Dodger team with a much better
manager) and 1990 (to an even weaker Reds team whose manager showed
LaRussa what World Series are about.)

But Williams now and LaRussa then go to the Hall of Fame. Shame.

--as ever, Russ

I was too young to see Williams manage the A's, but he also did great
work with the 1967 Red Sox, the 1984 San Diego Padres and other teams.

Good for him.

The 1972 Cincinnati Reds were one of the greatest teams of all-time.
Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Tony Perez, Dave Concepcion, and
a solid rotation and outstanding bullpen... The A's were without
Reggie Jackson, who pulled a hamstring stealing home for the pennant
clinching run vs. Detroit in the ALCS. Somehow, with all their
victories decided by 1 run, the A's won the series. While the heroics
of Gene Tenace and Joe Rudi are pretty vivid memories, nothing
compares to the bottom of the 9th inning of game 4... With the Reds
leading 2-1, Williams sent up THREE pinch-hitters, Gonzalo Marquez,
Don Mincher, and Angel Mangual (remember them?), and _all_ of them
singled to produce the come from behind win. Factoring in decisions
like using backup catcher Gene Tenace in place of starter Dave Duncan,
closing game 1 with 2+ innings from Vida Blue, and of course the
famous fake intentional walk of Johnny Bench, Dick Williams shined in
this series like no other manager ever has. He deserves to be in the
HOF, no freaking doubt about it.

Oddly, he only spent three seasons with the A's (winning two WS), the
least amount of time he spent with any team. It would be more
apropriate for him to go in with a blank hat (ala Catfish). I hope the
A's do not retire his number, which would be ridiculous for a guy who
only spent three seasons with the team (ala Rusty Staub in Montreal).

That fake walk was one of the best plays I can remember! Too bad I never
get to see it rerun. And isn't it MLB admin. that chooses which team a
multi-team player goes in as? If not, I'm (also) glad he picked the A's!!

Nyet.

The 1975 Reds were also overrated, since they needed a broken-bat
single in the top of the 9th inning in Game Seven to win the World
Series.

The 1976 Reds? Dominant.
