This can't hurt though. It's a minor league contract. Likely worth
less then 1 million and only should he make the club. He plays 1B and
will probably be another and better option besides Broadway or Fick.
Especially if he can still hit.

Especially if he can hit baseballs, not girlfriends.

The Belliard signing (to play first if Broadway can't make the club) makes
Travis Lee and Dmitri's chances look bad.

That's between him and the police. Not my business.

Belliard signing to play 1st? How closely do you follow baseball or
read the news? Belliard has played over 1000 games in his career and
has played a total of ZERO games at 1B. He's a middle IF playing 966
games at 2b.

Here's a portion of the article. I posted it yeaterday.

VIERA, Fla. (AP) -- Second baseman Ronnie Belliard agreed to a non-
guaranteed, minor league contract with the Washington Nationals on
Sunday that will pay him $750,000 if he makes the team.

"We feel it gives us protection in the middle of the diamond going
into spring training, plus a good right-handed bat off the bench,
which is something this club needed," general manager Jim Bowden
said.
"It gives us protection in the middle, flexibility in the middle,
depth."
The 31-year-old Belliard helped the St. Louis Cardinals win the World
Series last season, starting 14 of 16 postseason games.

You'll note he's called "Second baseman Ronnie Belliard?"

Then you should note that Bowden also said:
"If (Guzman) doesn't bounce back, we have the flexibility that Felipe
could go back to shortstop and Ronnie could play second," Bowden
said.

He provides some insurance for the Nationals, who are shifting Felipe
Lopez from shortstop to second base and hoping Cristian Guzman can
make a successful comeback after missing all of last season because
of
right shoulder surgery.

He's being signed to play 2nd because Guzman will likely be out of
shape, can't hit or field and might be one of the worst SS in the
Major Leagues. Now they can give Womack his bus ticket.

Bowden usues the word "Middle" 3 times in that paragraph. When did
they move 1st base to the "Middle" of the diamond? I must have missed
that?
Belliard has never played a game at 1st in about an 8 year Major
League Career.

You know, come to thing about it, most of these moves were successful
except LaCroy. Vidro moving made it possible to trade him and Soriano
has nothing but praise for Bowden moving him. (See article in today's
WaPo: http://tinyurl.com/yunlzb ) Guess we'll wait and see on Lopez.
Maybe Bowden isn't that much of a goofball.

Lopez played 2nd, 3rd and SS before he ever got to Washington. He was
at Toronto and Cincy. He played 3rd at Toronto and 2B with the Reds.
Changing his position is hardly new.
How Bowden would seriously know that Belliard can play 2nd base is
beyond me? He has never, I repeat never played even one game there in
his entire major league career. He certainly cannot hit like a 1st
baseman.
Lecroy had played 114 games behind the plate before he ever moved to
the National League. Again putting him at catcher was nothing new. All
this stuff is a matter of record.
You act as if Bowden were George Weiss or Casey Stengel.
The only position move change Bowden made was Soriano from 2nd to LF.
The Cubs will be putting him in CF. The Yankees had already moved
Soriano from SS to 2nd.
Moving a guy athletic enough to play SS is hardly innovative. Arod,
Yount, Banks, Ripken, Hornsby, all did it. Vidro will be nothing more
then a DH at Seattle.
Bowden is still a goofball. He proved it when he didn't trade Soriano
at the deadline.
You need a good reference besides Bowden. That's like pulling
information from your hat.

No I don't. Bowden flies by the seat of his pants. Sometimes it works
out, sometimes it doesn't.

The GM is a bad reference on what the club might do? Guess we'll have
to wait and see who is playing 1b on Opening Day.

No not at all. But to think 1) Bowden was the first to switch Soriano
from one position to another 2) Play Lopez somewhere other then 2B 3)
put Lecroy behind the plate, is just simply a lack of research on your
part.
Or that Bellaird who has never played first "Can play 1st."
Bowden doesn't have a clue. If he's never played there no one knows.
It's just obvious to me you don't take the time to look any of that
stuff up. You just parrot the guy as if it's the Gospel.

Vidro played 14 games at 1B in 1999. 8 last year. Another original
move by the great Jimmie Bowden?
You and he have a lot in common. Consistency.

Posting one quote by Bowden is "parroting the guy"? The article you posted
had several Bowden quotes. Are you parroting him? Are you another angry
guy on the web that has a hissy fit every time someone disagrees with him?
