The catching crop in the NL is pretty thin this year, so I was wondering
what people thought of the various options. Here's off the top of my head:

The Elite:
Mike Piazza

Strong:
Jason Kendall
Mike Lieberthal

Solid contributors:
Paul LoDuca
AJ Pierzynski
Jason Phillips
Ramon Hernandez
Charles Johnson

Questionable but with potential:
Ramon Castro
Johnny Estrada
Robby Hammock
Brian Schneider

Only if Desperate:
Jason LaRue
Michael Barrett
Todd Greene
Mike Redmond
Mike Matheny
Brent Mayne
Brad Ausmus

Even that only gets me to 19 catchers, and our NL-only 12-team league will
draft 24. I'd really, really like to avoid Paul Bako if at all possible.
Who has potential that should also go on this list?

I actually thought the crop was pretty strong - not in terms of stars,
but it wasn't really a struggle to find guys that would earn at least
a buck or two.

I don't have Mayne on my list of 24 (12 team league) but I do have:

Eddie Perez
Dave Ross
Corky Miller
Craig Wilson (you probably just forgot him)
Chad Moeller
Greg Zaun

I'd be particularly happy if I could get Moeller for $1 or $2.

Also I'd probably have Phillips ranked way higher than you - probably
the 2nd best behind Piazza. Wilson, even if his AB potential is in
question, has to go in your "Solid Contributors" group.

Hope this helps.

His injury last year--and age--would cause me to drop him to "Strong."

I'd add Chad Moeller to the "Questionable but with potential" category...but
Yost platooned catchers all last year, and will likely do so again.

You have Lieberthal as the best option, and Jason Phillips 2 or 3
rungs below him, and a rung below LoDuca? Why? Lieberthal was good,
but hardly great last year. Piazza at least has star upside,
Lieberthal has 20 HR, 90 RBI upside. He's not without his injury
questions either.

I like Jason Phillips. He's hit well in the minors, and with increased
PA's, his numbers should rise to about 70, 15, 70, .295. They could be
a little higher as well, though most people don't value him that
highly.

I'd just draft 2 of: Estrada, Phillips, Castro, and Craig Wilson if I
could. Wilson will probably go too high for my liking though.

Lots of RBI's, some power.

Lots of people are thinking Phillips will do good again...he's only had 1
good year, AFAIK...plus he's on a team with minimal run support...well, with
Piazza healthy, he might score more runs.

Piazza seems to be made of glass nowadays.

Phillips went for 9...much higher than I thought.

Wilson went for 2 in our league.
