Leyland is definitely a players manager.
Curtis Granderson has been striking out a lot lately --- has a .290
average... bases are loaded and Leyland pitch hits Granderson for
Infante.
ouch.

I give up. 14 months ago, what did you expect from this team? And STILL you
whine and complain about Leyland. Did it ever occur to you that a large part
of his succes may be BECAUSE he is a ""player's manager""?!?

might be logical, but Leyland did the same 'logical' move with Craig
Monroe a couple days ago and let C-Mo strike out five times.
I understand giving a struggling hitter some swings, but you have to
think of the team. Granderson could go out in the field at any time, he
didn't have to hit at that point, in fact Leyland could have pinch hit
with another hitter --- I forget if Casey was available or already in
the game...
and that said, I am not sure how logical it is to have a hitter, who has
struck out as much as Granderson (of late), hitting at that point
on the other hand, I admit Leyland has won more major league games in
the last four days than I have in my entire life.

Again, I give up, but, before I do, I will try this one more time:
One thing a good manager DOES NOT do is show signs of panic. OBVIOUSLY,
there are benefits of letting the players think you beleive they can do the
job.

I'll give you that...not the perfect part
and we won the game, so that is perfect
baseloaded, Granderson K's not perfect
The perfect part is we had a bullpen that did not give up any runs

Casey was already in the game having pinch-hit for and replaced Marcus
Thames in a similar move. Leyland made the right move pinch hitting
Granderson for Infante. Granderson has 13 triples, Infante none.
Infante has hit into 3 DPs, Granderson none (the bases were loaded at
that time). Granderson has 44 extra base hits, Infante 4 (to be fair
he's had fewer ABs than Granderson, but it still shows you got a
better chance of scoring some runs with Curtis at the plate than
Omar).
That Curtis didn't get a hit belies the fact that the odds favored him
over Infante in that situation. Give the pitcher some credit for
bearing down and doing his job.

I'd venture to say Leyland has won more MLB games in 1 day than
everyone in this newsgroup put together!

I like Curtis and when he is on, he is amazing, but I think as Maybin
matures, so better Granderson. If not, Granderson would make for good
trading material --- say in 2009.

If JL sends up a PH and the guy strikes out and that's the right move, what
would have been the wrong move? If he hadn't PH and Infante had hit a grand
slam would that have been the wrong move? Granderson would still have 13
triples, right? What a bizarre statistic to focus on. Granderson's the right
guy PH, he has 13 triples. WTF? OI has a higher BA and 50 fewer KOs, but CG
has 13 triples and has hit into three fewer DPs. Ergo, right move.
I don't have a problem with the move, but your trying to prove it was the
right move is dumb. Especially because it failed miserably. If it were a
"right" move it would have worked. Sparky used to do ridiculous things all
the time, forex use Leon Roberts as a PH for, well, anyone; when it worked
it was the right move. If it doesn't, its not.

with two outs, I wouldn't worry as much about double plays. I would also
look at what Granderson has done in the last few days, which was what he
