I would trade any 2 of our minor leagues for Justin Upton . Yes - that
includes Ellsbury, Lester, Buchholtz and whoever.

Jeez, Bilko, if you're gonna talk about some unknown player and say that
you'd trade
the Sox' best prospects for him, at least tell us who he is, for crying out
loud.

What's the big deal? I look at those stats and see a good prospect, but not
one who would be worth giving up on "Ellsbury, Lester, Buchholtz (or)
whoever."

Looks like just another good prospect to me. Nothing overly special.

For a 19-year old playing AA ball? Nothing special?

That's no guarantee that he's going to advance beyond some of our best
prospects, just because he's in AA at 19yo.

Besides, I'll take our pitching prospects over a position player prospect
most every day. If we were talking about a near MLB ready prospect
at AAA, we might be having a different discussion. But he's still at AA,
regardless of his age.

He's at AA, doing great, and probably will be playing OF for the
Diamondbacks before the season is over. At 19. I'm not saying there's
any guarantee of anything, but to say he's "nothing overly special" is
wrong.

From CBS on this 19 year old:

Arizona's Justin Upton, whose older brother B.J. played in the Futures Game
in 2004 and '05, hit a solo homer Sunday in the third off Fautino De Los
Santos of the White Sox for the first run for Dave Winfield's U.S. team.
Upton is the best prospect in baseball at this point among minor leaguers.
He just might be hot enough to arrive later in the second half and earn
himself a starring role to open 2008.

Really? You'd give Ellsbury and Buccholtz for him? I'm not sure I trade
either...even up. Now Lester? With Moss? Maybe. Just for the right
handed bat, something we ARE missing. I don't know enough about him, but do
you really think he's so much better a prospect than Ellsbury.

I don't know much about Upton. Didn't know that much about Mickey
Mantle or Al Kaline befreo they came up. But being really, really good
at a young age is a fairly reliable sign of greatness (absent setbacks
from injury etc.). Of course, all minor leaguers, even phenoms, have
some risk. I'd say more for pitchers than for outfielders.

So are you suggesting that Ellsbury wasn't really, really good at a young
age? I know he's sooo much older now...practically ancient. Too bad he
wasted those years in college. Smile

I don't know how good Ellsbury was at 19. But being as good as Upton
is at 19 is really, really rare, so I think people would have heard
more of Ellsbury some time ago if he were that good at 19.

I suspect a few people noticed Ellsbury, when at 19, he hit .330 with a .510
OBP...7 HRs and 33 RBI in 53 games and 206 ABs for Oregon State...but maybe
you know better.
