Who suddenly stopped flailing listlessly at every offering tossed his way.
And who suddenly (if only briefly) stopped letting every routine bouncer
skip by him. Does the word "petulance" ring any bells?

Hairston missed signs in consecutive games to start the likely-brief Al
Pedrique Era. Alomar became the starter because there was no onme else to
take over at second when Pedrique punished Hairston. Reports from various
sources around the country indicate that Alomar can be had by anyone willing
to take him, though.

And tried mightily his first game as manager to yank Randy from a game in
which Unit was in total control. Won't be long before we're all reflecting
wisftully on how much confidence Brenly had in his starters.

In fairness, Brenneman has mentioned that Terrero has also been told that
this is his final opportunity with this organization; if there are any
problems or he fails to produce, he's done.

The club is still two established starting pitchers (allowing Sparks, Good
and Dessens to form a killer middle-innings crew and shipping the current
bunch out to Tucson), a regular catcher and a disciplined righty-hitting
4-hole hitter from contention. Unless trades for Finley and Johnson return
=three= starters (one to replace Randy) as well as the needed position
players -- and Pedrique makes a commitment to his rotation -- the club won't
be improved. It's unlikely to get much worse, though, either, if only
because there's not much room =to= get much worse. <shrug>
