Mets 2008
March 1-0
April 13-12
May 13-15
June 13-15
July 18-8
August 17-10
Phillies 2008
March 0-1
April 15-12
May 17-12
June 12-14
July 15-10
August 14-13
What's to draw from this? I'm not sure, except obviously the Mets are
35-18 in the last two months. If they continue that pace, they will
win 17-18 more games. That leaves them with 92-93 wins. In order to
reach 93 wins, the Phillies would need to go 20-7. If the Mets play .
500 ball (14-13), the Phillies would need to go 17-10, which is a
better stretch then they've had at any point this season. I think if
the Mets can get through the next 5 days (2 in Florida and 3 in
Milwaukee) still in first place, the odds are very good they can hang
on. I think what's lost in the collapse of last year was that the
Phillies went 13-4 in the last 17 games, which was their best 17 game
stretch of the season.
Of course, with this bullpen, you never know. >> Stay informed about: Mets v. Phillies By Month |

The Cubs will win the division way before the series with the Mets and
will be resting players. You can bet they won't send their best in
every game to avoid giving the Mets a preview of their team (in case
the Mets make it to the playoffs) >> Stay informed about: Mets v. Phillies By Month |

I don't see that being much of a factor though. The success of the
Cubs this year has been that they are incredibly deep, both in the
lineup and on the mound. They rest players anyway. I agree that if
the Mets don't have a lead going into that series, they're in a lot of
trouble. The only good news for me is the games are at Shea. The
Cubs have basically been a .500 road team, but they're impossible to
beat at home, which thankfully the Phillies are learning this weekend. >> Stay informed about: Mets v. Phillies By Month |

The wildcard here is that the Mets will have, arguably, their toughest
four-game series -- against the Cubs -- during the last week of the season,
at a time when the Phils will likely be beating up on the Braves. As such,
the Mets really need to pull ahead before that final week. >> Stay informed about: Mets v. Phillies By Month |

They have to beat the Cubs anyway. I think at this point, the competition
is irrelevant. If your a championship caliber team, you MUST win.
