There is a new format of a league that I started playing last year that
blows everything else away that I've ever done. Its at
Mendozabaseball.com.
Mendoza Baseball is better described as a "baseball simulation" than as
a fantasy league. Its the same sort of thing where you pick players and
they accumulate stats for your team, but there are some very
significant differences.
The biggest difference is that you don't compete for prize money -
instead each franchise earns "revenue". Whereas in fantasy baseball you
maximize the amount you spend on your roster up to the limit in an
effort to win, in Mendoza you can play a high priced strategy and go
for victory, or play with a low salary team and go for profit. You
don't have to finish in first to make money and you can finish in first
and lose money.
Its an online game, and it uses an ebay-style auction at the beginning
of the season. These are keeper leagues. It uses sabermetrics (runs
produced, runs allowed and Pythagoream Theorem to determine wins and
losses) to determine the standings.
The league developers are constantly striving to make this game as
closely realistic as possible.
I started a new league as a commissioner called "Steve Balboni Memorial
League" - I invite you to go to the homepage at
www.mendozabaseball.com, take the tour, read the rules. If you are
interested, email me at marcshiman at gmail.com and I'll send you a
password to sign up.
I have no financial interest or stake in this product. I'm just playing
the game.
