I believe the every-team-represented rule is in there at the behest of
television and the sponsors, who don't want to see a single major league
market left without a local player on the roster, to, theoretically at
least, maximize the viewership in each market.
But there's no explanation for Jason Varitek's being on the team at the
expense of A.J. Pierzyski, or Kurt Suzuki for that matter, is there? Oh,
that's right, it was a "players' vote" selection. I just had no idea that
the players were supposed to ignore performance entirely and vote for the
"best clubhouse presence."
