Obviously it's a very small sample size, but I really like what Marmol has
shown so far.

He appears to have excellent control. Even his balls don't miss by much
(insert pun here).

6 Ks, 3 hits and no walks in 4 IP. 97MPH fastball and a very nice
slider/curve.

For those slightly interested, but not enough to look it up,
at West Tenn this year, Marmol had

11 starts, 58 innings, 2.33 ERA
42 hits, 25 walks 67 strikeouts ONE HR yielded

The innings per start seems low, but no one on that staff is
averaging six innings per start so I think it is just a case of
not wearing out the arms of young pitchers.

The control was not quite as good as he has shown to date in the majors.
The HR number is great - even for West Tenn. Everyone on the staff has
given up at least two except Marmol, the closer Rapada, and guys with
ten or fewer innings.

And only Marmol, Pignatiello, and two guys with very few innings
have more K's than IP.

One more thing. Marmol was 5 for 19 (.263) with one HR and two doubles.

Well, he was a catcher originally. If he had hit like that earlier in
his career, he might still be a catcher.

Looking at this minor league numbers he walks a lot of hitters. Thats
going to
catch up to him very quickly.

If my math is right, and going by Ray's numbers, Marmol allowed 3.87 walks
per 9 innings (BB/9) at Iowa. That's by no means a great number, but just
for rough comparison's sake, here's how the Cub starters stack up this year.

Staff, 4.44

Maddux, 2.26
Wood, 3.66
Marshall, 4.03
Rusch, 4.07
Zambrano, 5.23

Of course, the Cubs are dead last in the NL in that category. But hell,
Marmol is still an improvement. And going by walks alone, which guy above
would you assume is the Cubs' ace?
