the essential and often ignored point.
Analyse the deal. Does it seem like a good deal for one team. In that
case, it's not likely to be accepted by the other team. Could you
possibly argue it might be good/bad for both teams. Then start talking
maybe.

theres nothing "straight forward" in your Upton trade. Bucholz and
Ellsbury would not be worth giving up for Upton. Bucholz is being
talked about as a potential #1 starter.

While I agree this proposed trade doesn't make sense (and by now is a
moot point) why
is it automatically assumed that Ichiro will lose his speed? Players
are in much better
condition today and Ichiro shows no signs of slowing. Didn't anyone
watch Kenny Lofton
the last Texas series? 8 for 16 with 3 BBs and 4 SBs, plus some great
D. He's forty.

Note that in my post I said that speed players obviously don't lose their
speed
at the same times, but like everyone, they will eventually lose it. The
question
is, are you willing to invest a lot of money and take the risk that a 34
year old
speed player will maintain that speed for the length of a long term
contract. I
wouldn't take that risk.

OTOH, it would be far less risky, had someone considered taking on Ichiro
as a half-season rental., since it would seem ridiculously unlikely that
he'd
lose his speed over the course of a single half-season.

Sorry, much as I like Ichiro, I'd rather stick with the younger, speedy
players
that we already have in the system, if we're talking about long term
investments.
