Post subject: Is Magowan set to retire?
Archived from groups: alt>sports>baseball>sf-giants (more info?)

There have been several blog postings the past two days (from newspaper
writers) suggesting that Peter Magowan, the head of the Giants, is
thinking of retiring in the not too distant future.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing for the Giants? Or will it make any
difference at all?

Below are the links to the three blog entries:

Mark Gonzales' Blog (Chicago Tribune):

Ray Ratto's Blog (San Francisco Chronicle):

Tim heard it from Ray, who heard it from Mark, who heard it from "two
sources" he did not identify. So it's just a rumor at this stage.

However close to reality that rumor might be I think a "change in
control" would be a good thing, as the organization seems to have lost
the ability to meet its challenges head on. That they lacked the energy
to dump Sabean last year was an indication to me that they'd simply run
out of steam as an ownership group.

Of course it's possible that somebody really stupid with lots of
willpower might assume control, but not everybody can be a Steinbrenner,
so there's hope.

I would hope it would be a "good thing".
Although, perhaps, it is better to have the devil you know rather than the
devil you don't know.
If BS gets his "walking papers" with the change, it would be a step in the
right direction!

Well, it would probably mean Sue Burns would take over as managing general
partner, which would be good for all you Bonds fans.

If it led to Larry Baer getting fired, I'd consider it a good thing, but I
assume he's got more friends in the organization than just Magowan.
Chances are that it would be business as usual, since Magowan is far from
the only voice in the room guiding the Giants financial decisions, just
the strongest voice. But we probably wouldn't get any more stupid Zito
moves from the managing general partner anymore.
