Dave Roberts was a complete ballplayer, not a guy whose only job was to
steal bases. And while it turned out that he didn't get in the field much
in the
playoffs, that was as much about him being the 5th outfielder as it was
being
the team's designated basestealer.

And in 2004, Dave Roberts wasn't an extravagant use of a roster slot
*because* he was a 5th outfielder, not just a pinch runner.
