The World Hockey Association Announces the Appointment of Butch
Goring
as Managing Director of Hockey Operations for the WHA
The World Hockey Association (PINKSHEETS: WHKA) announced this
morning
that Butch Goring has been appointed as Managing Director of Hockey
Operations for the WHA Hockey League. His appointment is expected to
be effective immediately.
Mr. Goring, considered to be one of the legends of hockey, is a
former
player for the Los Angeles Kings, the Boston Bruins and the New York
Islanders and served as head coach for the Islanders for two years.
Goring has also coached for the Boston Bruins, the Spokane Chiefs and
the Anchorage Aces. His extensive management experience extends from
the NHL to the AHL, the WHL, the IHL, and the WCHL, but he is often
best remembered as being instrumental in helping the New York
Islanders win the Stanley Cup four times while playing for the
franchise during the 1980s.
WHA CEO Ricky Smith commented, "Butch Goring brings to the WHA a
level
of experience and expertise which would be hard to find in anyone
other than him. He has had a blue ribbon hockey career and we are so
pleased that he has joined our effort to produce a top shelf product
here at the WHA."
Smith added, "The WHA is going to be much larger next season than it
was last year and we needed someone with the organizational skills
and
winning attitude that Butch carries with him every step he takes
throughout the day."
Smith continued, "In the 1970s, Butch was offered one million dollars
to play for the Edmonton Oilers who at that time were part of the old
WHA and he turned it down. Now he has decided to join the new WHA and
we are honored to have him. We expect his contribution will help us
to
accomplish our vision of making the WHA the premier Junior A Hockey
League in North America. The WHA now has a four-time Stanley Cup
winner on its management staff. What can you say to top that?"
