What about special contacts that lets the player see the seams on the
ball better?
From MLB.com:
Seeing clearly: After grounding out in his first at-bat Saturday, Ken
Griffey Jr. decided to run back into the clubhouse and bust out the
Nike-designed, vision-enhancing contact lenses he had been trying out in
batting practice the past couple weeks.
The new lenses, which are not yet available to the public, work to block
out the sun and also help baseball players pick up the seams on the ball
as it heads toward them.
Perhaps it was just a coincidence, but Griffey walked his next time up.
Then, in the fifth inning, he doubled to break out of an 0-for-10 slump.
Griffey hadn't yet decided if he would wear the non-prescription contacts
for Sunday's day game.
"[Nike is] coming out with night ones," Griffey said. "Those are the ones
I want."
Graves also has a pair of the contacts, though his are prescription and
have taken him longer to adjust to.
"I'm not ready to wear them in a game," Graves said. "They relax me too
much. I'll keep wearing them during BP to get used to them. But I don't
want to be so relaxed that I don't know what's going on."
Graves said the contacts are just one more new toy that helps hitters.
"It's an advantage to the hitter, no question," he said. "Anything that
helps the pitcher is illegal."
Graves also said he wouldn't be surprised to see a majority of ballplayers
wearing the lenses in the coming years. That's when he'll stop using them,
though.
"I don't want to be a freak with everybody else," he said.

Where does one draw the line with performance enhancement?

I've always wondered how come baseball players don't wear sunglasses
when they bat. Not dark sunglasses, but special ones that block out
glare and/or enhance red seams. >> Stay informed about: If not Lasik... |

I am not a major league hitter, but probably because they don't help.
Ballparks are built so the batter faces east. (That's why a left handed
pitcher is called south, since when they face west, their throwing hand in
on the south side.) Since most games where the sun will be a factor are
played in the afternoon, the sun will be in the west, behind the batter.

cool factoid! So if you wanted to built the ultimate pitcher's park,
you would build the stadium so the batter faces west and gets blinded
by the sun. >> Stay informed about: If not Lasik... |

Thanks Richard, I never knew why they called lefties southpaws.
