Agreed. Bowa's a good short-term tyrant. IOW, if you've got a team of
veteran underachievers who're close to making the playoffs, but just not
getting it together, Bowa's your guy to take over around the All Star
break and scream and froth until the "lollygaggers" get motivated and
start playing up to their potential.
He wears out his welcome almost immediately, though, so if you're going to
bring Bowa on as a mid-season tyrant to flog your team into the playoffs,
don't count on renewing his employment the following spring.
There's zero evidence that Bowa's good at developing youngsters, or
molding a group of youngsters into a cohesive team.
I hate to beat a dead horse here, but the guy who has proven to be most
likely to turn the current crop of D-Backs into a cohesive team is
currently managing the Texas Rangers. I just don't see anybody with MLB
managing experience (who is or soon will be available) who can top
Showalter. Jack McKeon would be a better choice than Showalter, but he's
not going to be available either.
So who's an up-and-comer with a good track record in the minors? I've
heard that Wally Backstabber^H^H^H^H Backman is considered a candidate to
replace Pedrique.
