It's common knowledge that Larry Bowa is going to get fired after the
regular season ends. How about him managing the D-Backs? The D-Backs
need someone to light a fire under their butts and I think Bowa's the
man for the job. Good idea or bad idea?

Very bad idea. The Dbacks are in rebuilding mode - Bowa is a guy who
fancies himself good at motivating veterans. I say fancies himself,
because apparently the team hates him.

I'm still amazed that Bowa got a second job managing in the majors
after a truly horrible stint with the Padres. Took him nearly 15
years to get another shot and he apparently didn't learn a damn
thing.

Agreed. Bowa's a good short-term tyrant. IOW, if you've got a team of
veteran underachievers who're close to making the playoffs, but just not
getting it together, Bowa's your guy to take over around the All Star
break and scream and froth until the "lollygaggers" get motivated and
start playing up to their potential.

He wears out his welcome almost immediately, though, so if you're going to
bring Bowa on as a mid-season tyrant to flog your team into the playoffs,
don't count on renewing his employment the following spring.

There's zero evidence that Bowa's good at developing youngsters, or
molding a group of youngsters into a cohesive team.

I hate to beat a dead horse here, but the guy who has proven to be most
likely to turn the current crop of D-Backs into a cohesive team is
currently managing the Texas Rangers. I just don't see anybody with MLB
managing experience (who is or soon will be available) who can top
Showalter. Jack McKeon would be a better choice than Showalter, but he's
not going to be available either.

So who's an up-and-comer with a good track record in the minors? I've
heard that Wally Backstabber^H^H^H^H Backman is considered a candidate to
replace Pedrique.

Thanks for the responses. I have to agree about Buck Showalter. He
took over a Yankee organization that was in schambles in 1992 and
brought them back to respectability with a mix of veterans and
rookies. If it wasn't for John Wetteland and the Yankee bullpen doing
a major choke job during the Seattle series in 1995, Showalter would
have been enjoying the success of the Yankees' championship seasons
that he helped create. Showalter did the same job for the expansion
D-Backs and after he was fired in 2000, Bob Benely enjoyed the fruits
of Showalter's labor with the D-Backs 2001 World Series win. It comes
as no surprise to me that Showalter was able to achieve the Texas
Rangers' unexpected success this season this quickly.
