And is Byrd's place in the rotation getting shaky?

byrd has to rely on guile and location to succeed. given the young
starters we have, i wasn't in favor of bringin byrd back, but i'm
guessing that shapiro really thought that 2008 might be our best shot
of winning the world series, and if byrd could reproduce his success
of 2007 it would be worth it. he could still go 12-8 and if that helps
us get back into the playoffs, it won't be the worst waste of money,
especially since we're due for another injury or two given how
injury-free we were in 2007.

as for the original question, wouldn't it be absolutely insane if we
benched sabathia when westbrook came back? of our starters, he's got
the worst record and worst ERA.

Laffey's ERA is 1.83.
He's had three quality starts in three appearances.
His first start was a bit messy due to awful defense.

Byrd's ERA is 4.28.
He's had three quality starts in seven appearances.
He's been the victim of some shakey defense also.

So, obviously Laffey goes back to AAA,
unless he can hit >= .250, then he stays and plays DH.

Quite honestly, I'd think some team needs starting pitching
and would welcome Byrd and Marte on their team.
Maybe Shapiro can find someone who can hit and play 3rd.

the whole division is struggling - especially the mega-million roster
of the tigers. just imagine the stress level in the front office there
- they've already cut jacques jones and swapped guillen and cabrera
around in the infield.

where is that poultre guy? let's look at the ERA of the tiger
starters:

verlander 6.43
bonderman 4.80
rogers 5.82
robertson 6.64
willis 7.20

and they're a combined 7-17. they're not even giving their bullpen a
chance to implode - yet - they're barely averaging 6 innings a start.
----
the indians are less than games out of 1st place. the pitching has
been decent - sabathia notwithstanding, but lee more than makes up for
that.

i guess i feel like the hitting will come around, and i'm actually
more concerned about borowski's injury - i remember what happened when
wickman got hurt. we're got more depth in terms of closer replacements
with betancourt and kobayashi but betancourt has yet to prove that he
can handle the emotional stress. i'd rather see kobayashi in there,
but i can understand why wedge has gone to betancourt.
