Loria had promised that when he took over the team he would not seek a
retractable-roof stadium. About a week before the Parc Labatt deal was to be
signed he mysteriously changed his mind, demanding a retractable roof ballpark.
The change added too much to the cost of the park, the financing collapsed and
eventually the lease on the land went to someone else.
Considering his previous statements regarding the park, his efforts to erode
the fan base by his mismanagement of the broadcasting contracts and his
Selig-aided escape to Miami shortly thereafter there can be little doubt that
Loria's actions were deliberately designed to destroy any remaining support in
the city for the team, very likely in preparation for a move.
Selig and Loria wanted the team to move and they deliberately created the
situation which made it attractive for them to do so while another team in a
similar situation was given every possible assistance from the league office.
That similar team was the Milwaukee Brewers...Selig's own franchise.
This is why Selig and Loria are in court facing RICO charges from the Expos
minority owners.
