Post subject: LSU Tiger Baseball Tops Arizona State

Lane Mestepey pitched eight good innings and LSU hung on to win 6-5
over ASU Friday Nite in Baton Rouge. Clay Dirks pitched a scoreless
ninth to save the win.

LSU led 6-3 for most of the game, but the Sun Devils fought back to
make it intresting in the eighth, on a bloop hit, an error, and a
couple of solid singles with two outs. Mestepey finished the inning
with a 6-5 lead, but was relieved to start the ninth.

Arizona State will play three more games this weekend, one on Saturday
against Western Illinois and a split double header (once each against
LSU and Western Illinois) on Sunday. LSU plays Saturday against Western
Illinois and then Sunday against Arizona State again. Seems like a
strange schedule, but I am sure Pat "Mr. Personality" Murphy has his
reasons.

Next weekend LSU starts the always brutal SEC schedule at Georgia.

i saw that schedule and did a double-take as well...wonder if they were
just trying to simulate a "regional-type" weekend????

I think that for some reason ASU needed a quality opponent for this
weekend. LSU was already scheduled to play Western Illinois. They made
an agreement to play WI two games, and LSU two games. LSU is still
going to pay Western their retainer for the series, even though they
are only going to play them once (on Saturday), but I am sure LSU is
keeping the gate for all the games. LSU is not paying ASU, and does not
have to reciprocate with a series at Tempe next year either. It is my
understanding that LSU coach Ray "Smoke" LavaI got a booster club to
pay ASU's hotel expenses for the trip.
I think Murphy is nuts (Did anyone ever tell him that steroids are bad
for you?), but who am I to say.
