So Krivsky inherits a mess from O'Brien, including the Milton and
Griffey contracts, and gets just two seasons to turn everything around
before he's canned in favor of Castellini's long-time pal, Walt
Jocketty. Isn't that interesting.

I was listening to the radio while on my way to lunch, and Paul
Daugherty discussed this. Evidently, WK wasn't easy to get along with
- good baseball brain, lousy people skills. Without having any
details, Doc speculated that it was a personal conflict that led to
the surprising timing of the dismissal, and I expect the problem was
between him and Baker. Baker's due more than $10 million, so WK
couldn't win that fight, but I don't expect we'll hear anything to
that effect in the press conference.

Absolutely. He acquired a number of quality parts for virtually
nothing (Phillips, Burton, Hamilton/Volquez) and more importantly
didn't empty the cupboards in the high minors in an effort to "win
now." His mistakes were generally financial, and even those we're
disasters - the Stanton and Castro contracts look bad, but compared to
Eric Milton they're hardly worth mentioning.
I think WK's one real strategic mistake was the Kearns/Lopez trade,
but this mistake wasn't moving those players as much as it was dealing
with Jim Bowden. Considering some of the things DanO did, WK has
certainly been a better custodian of the franchise. >> Stay informed about: Krivski: Toast! |

Wait till y'all see what a pathological liar Jocketty is. And you'll
know when they're getting ready to trade a player. Jocketty and his
operatives within the organization will start softening him up with
well-placed half-truths with the local press, so as to turn the fans
against him. And after said player's gone, then he'll bust out the
real cheap shots.
He's your Liar now.

I'm most curious about the timing. Even Tony Perez got farther than this
in to the season. What exactly does it do to can the GM at this point?
Put another way, why not just can him *before* the season started.
Say whatever you will about his short tenure, but I think you'd have a
hard time convincing me that Krivsky didn't leave the franchise better
off than he found it...and you can't say that for either of his two

This is pure speculation, but I'd say no. From a skills standpoint,
the player on the Cardinals who was most similar to Dunn was Chris
Duncan: Tall, left-handed, playing left field but probably oughta be
at first base, three true outcome type of guy. And I don't recall
Jocketty being much of a Duncan fan. He had to keep his mouth shut
about it because Duncan's father was in the dugout, but every chance
he got, he shipped him back to Memphis.

I'll second Lance's opinion - it was sad how often the organization
would smear a player as a prelude to getting rid of them, most notably
how they treated Ray Lankford.

Everybody who saw this coming, Raise your hand.
Yeah, me neither.

The press was constantly hammering on how Krivsky was so tight lipped.
And Dusty sure has thrown him under the bus. Dusty's comments about
Stanton and Hatteberg have pretty much killed any trade value there. The
Fogg/Belisle thing was announced in a weird way as well.
If Castellini wants to turn things around quicker than he has, he better
be ready to pony up some serious cash.

Alright, enough drama. What we really need to know is his philosophy around
what we always talk around here, sabermetrics. Wasn't part of the reason he
was let go because he was "old fashioned" in his methods of evaluating

It was more than that, even. Jocketty simply refused to operate in a
front office that was run like a business and refused to cooperate with
parts of the organization that he wasn't the dictator of. DeWitt was
trying to overhaul a very weak player development system and replaced
Jocketty's buddy, Bruce Manno, with Jeff Luhnow, a guy with very
different ideas and Jocketty responded to that by simply not talking to
that entire department. DeWitt gave Jocketty plenty of time to grow up,
