Having him on a couple fantasy teams, my immediate guess is because he
put up a 717 OPS for the month of June. I haven't had the time to watch
a game in weeks though, so I can't make any comment on his defense.

That performance in June doesn't seem bad enough to me to warrant this,
unless he had a particularly brutal stretch in there. Hell, it ain't
Thorman-esque, that's for sure.

I think it was partly Chipper's injury. Escobar played well when
Chipper was out and he's probably a better defensive player than Kelly.

And just for comparison's sake:
Thorman's 2007: 220/253/397 (241 PAs)
Brogna's 2001: 248/297/335 (220 PAs)
Mondesi's 2005: 211/271/359 (154 PAs)
DeRosa's 2004: 239/293/320 (332 PAs)

Cox has always demanded that his middle infielders at least be competent in
the field. KJ is just not a good 2nd baseman. He's awful at turning the
double play and has very little range to his right. I think Cox was willing
to let these things slip when he was hot in April, but now that some of
Kelly's flaws as a hitter are being exposed again he's getting more "rest". >> Stay informed about: Why did KJ lose his starting job? |

I guess we shouldn't be too surprised that Thorman is struggling this badly,
but it sucks that we have no other options. Richmond's 1Bs have sucked. I
suppose we could finagle some arrangement of play between 1B and LF with
Harris, Diaz and Salty, but something needs to be done.
At least Andruw appears to be hitting at last.

That sounds plausible to me. Of course, Escobar has never played 2B before
himself, so I'm curious to see how he does over there, but I could see a
combination of hitting and defense being the problem for Bobby.

I think it's simply a matter of Cox being enamored with Escobar; he has said
himself that Johnson did "nothing wrong" but that he just couldn't stand to
let Escobar sit. I think JS is working the phones.

Perhaps he should let the guy who can get on base play 1B and sit
Thorman.

Has he looked better defensively? I don't think he'd ever played 2B in the
minors, though I presume he was a better defensive shortstop than was KJ.
