He turned a bunch of doubles into homers.
Here's an interesting comparison.
AB BB 2B HR XBH AVG OBP SLG OPS
2003 595 53 28 36 64 277 338 513 851
2005 (projected) 594 66 28 52 80 278 360 601 961
"difference" -1 13 0 16 16 1 22 88 110
Does anyone seriously believe that Andruw acquired a magical ability to
hit homers without an ability to hit doubles? As much as that would be
great, I think it's highly unlikely.
By way of comparison, right now Andruw is on pace to hit 65% of his
extra base hits for home runs. His career rate is 48%). In 2004, 60% of
Barry Bonds' extra base hits were homers; in 2003, it was 66%. Only Marc
McGwire has consistently posted such a high homer/double ratio. Jason
Giambi has done it in a couple of years, as has A-Rod.
I would say that Andruw's power increase this year represents a
legitimate improvement; he's never hit more than 72 XBH in a year, and
that was when he was getting 650 at bats. But the improvement isn't as
big as his recent homer spree would make it seem. His walk rate seems to
be more or less in line with his career rate. His PECOTA will almost
certainly project a line in between 2003 and 2005, probably something
like 275/350/550.
I'll take what I can get though. Gift horses, mouths, that sort of
thing.
Cheers,
Nick
