In the Dodgers' defense, once they clinched, they basically treated
the last four regular season games like spring training. Look at who
was marched out in the series finale against San Diego and the first
game against San Francisco. And Torre continuing the tradition of
player-coaches in the last game? So, had they attempted to remain
competitive, the margin would have been greater.
Was it Torre? Clearly not. The Dodgers lost MANY games because of
Joe's insistence on standing pat. During the last eight-game slide, I
recall at least two occasions where Juan Pierre led off an inning, as
the tying run, with a walk or single. Not once did he take a third
step away from first base. The man is a walking triple and Joe didn't
move him. He insisted on riding Broxton, despite the fact that Jumbo
Johnny blew as many saves this season as Rivera did in his career. He
was brought in to deal with the clubhouse issues that felled Grady
Little last year. Yet, even after Manny and Casey joined up, the
fortune of the team was dictated by Jeff Kent's attitude, same as last
year. Note that only when Kent went on the DL did the Dodgers finally
start playing like a playoff team.
The turn-around came because a disgruntled Red Sox player came over
with something to prove. He has proven it and will continue to do so
when he signs with the Yankees next year. I wonder, once Manny joins
the Yankee line-up, how many of these Red Sox trolls (pulling double-
duty here and in the Angel NG) will be heard from.
