I was reading Bill James' book on managers and he describes how strong
a Joe McCarthy All Star Team is pulled from the best seasons of the
best players of his Cubs, Yankees and Red Sox teams. James gives his
own main lineup, starters, closer team, but I decided to do a total
roster version.

The starters are the same as his except that he used DiMaggio's 39 Win
Share 1937 season in which he hit 46 homers and had 167 RBI.
Normally, you'd have three catchers, but Birdie Tebbetts just wasn't
good enough in 1948-1950 to put on this team, and he was the only main
starting catcher McCarthy had besides Hartnett and Dickey. If we have
a DH, Wilson would probably play left and Williams would DH, but
perhaps Keller should. Honorable mention should go to Billy Goodman,
the only utility man to win a batting title.
If you don't trust the war year performances, then rotate Chandler to
relief and promote Blake. Replace Stirnweiss with the 27 win share
seasons of either Lazzeri or Doerr:
T Lazzeri 27 IF www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYY/1932.shtml
B Doerr 27 IF www.baseball-reference.com/teams/BOS/1948.shtml
Like Stirnweiss, both had the most fielding win shares at second in the
AL in those seasons. Gordon and Keller had strong performances before
the war so they stay.
If you'd prefer a shortstop among your infield bench instead of two
second basemen, substitute Rizzuto's 25 win share 1942 season, nearly
half of which is from fielding.
P Rizzuto 25 IF www.baseball-reference.com/teams/NYY/1942.shtml
Six starters is actually about right for that era when there were a lot
more doubleheaders and travel days.
Murphy was McCarthy's only dedicated reliever, hence three starters
used as set up men/spot starters. Kinder actually relieved more than
he started in 1950, but McCarthy only managed the first 59 games that
year. >> Stay informed about: Joe McCarthy All Star Team |

Cool. Now do the same thing for Connie Mack, John McGraw and a few
others & then someone can simulate a league with those teams
playing each other.

There's plenty of room to quibble over these selections. (I could
easily have picked, say, Roger Clemens's best season with the Yankees
over John Tudor's, for instance, and probably should have -- showing my
bias, I'm sure), but this is probably about as good a team as any, all
in all.

Off-hand, even though he didn't manage as long, I'd guess a Ralph
Houk team could do just as well as a Joe Torre team. Let's see...
MGR Ralph Houk
C Elston Howard 1961 NYY 129 GP, .387 OBP, .549 SLG, 153 OPS+

RP John Hiller 1976 DET 121 IP, 2.38 ERA, 155 ERA+
RP Luis Arroyo 1961 NYY 119 IP, 2.19 ERA, 169 ERA+
Lord, Houk had lousy second basemen. And he liked to let his relief
pitchers pitch. In 1974, John Hiller pitched in 59 games, starting none
of them, and he still threw 150 IP!
I'm not sure that Houk's boys could beat Torre's boys, now that I
look at them. I figured I only get to use one Mickey Mantle season
(otherwise, he'd be playing 2 or 3 outfield positions as well as first
base). On the other hand, there's not a need for a lot of pitchers on
a Houk team, so one could always make sure the bench is full of
platoon-advantage hitters for the late innings.
Catch you later.

How much 1B did Bill Freehan play? He was always a Catcher when I saw
him in a game. For someone with a weak throwing arm, he was a great
Catcher.
Why would anyone DH Dewey Evans and play Jim Rice in the OF? Is there
some method in Sabremetrics that evaluates Outfielders defensively that
is SO opposite to what just watching them play would indicate? I know
Rice wasn't terrible but Evans was as good a RF as Maris and both were
good enough to move one of them to LF and let Rice DH. In fact, both of
them were great.

Jefferies, but not A-Rod 2004 133 OPS+? The latter, by the way, is
generally seen as having started slowly this year, but he's already
..026 in OBP and .090 in SLG above last year. >> Stay informed about: Joe McCarthy All Star Team |

bb-ref seems to be down right now, so I can't check OPS+s, but I think
Clarke's 1969 is probably better overall than Barrett's 1984. They were
both well above replacement level and Clarke played significantly more.

Yes. I'd keep Dewey's arm in RF and move Maris to LF. If you want
someone who actually played the position, than maybe Rice stays in LF,
but you have to find a real DH.

He was listed as a first baseman for that year in bb-ref. I
didn't check the splits on that when I posted. Apparently, Freehan
played 65 games at first that year (21 more than anyone else on the
team), and 63 games at catcher (while Jerry Moses caught in 74 games).

Well, I was trying to play outfielders where they played originally.
Rice played left and Evans played right. Arbitrary decision on my part
(which I made when I had both Dale Murphy and Bernie Williams available
to play outfield for the Joe Torre all-stars -- I wanted to play Bernie
in left, where his weak throwing arm wouldn't have been as big a deal
and taken advantage of his Gold Glove fielding, but then thought that
was too much monkeying around, so just moved the former MVP Murphy to
the bench instead).
Catch you later.

It's up now.
2B Horace Clarke 1969 NYY 156 GP, .339 OBP, .367 SLG, 101 OPS+
2B Marty Barrett 1984 BOS 139 GP, .358 OBP, .383 SLG, 102 OPS+
I'm fine with replacing Barrett with Clarke, given the games played.
(In my defense, I was going through lots of different years and looking
at lots of different numbers, so though I tried to keep track of playing
time, there were definitely times when things slipped through the cracks).

Well, as I said in another post, I tried to play positional players
in positions that they played. It was an arbitrary decision born out of
trying to decide whether to move Bernie Williams to left or bump Dale
Murphy to the bench. My feeling on DHs was that I would just use the
best hitter available. If Evans had played on a team with Tris Speaker,
Willie Mays, and Richie Ashburn (in their primes), he might well have
DHed (if that were an option). But I totally agree with your assessments
of their relative defensive skills. I think Evans was a better player
than Rice, so I was glad to find a position for him, given the arbitrary
decision I made about positions.
Catch you later.

That's just an oversight on my part. I think I wrote down Horner
early in the process and by the time I got to the later Yankee teams I
was looking more for pitchers and corner outfielders. I'd replace Bob
Horner with ARod in the starting lineup (and, seeing as there are only
four bench players there, I might well add Horner to the bench, figuring
he covers both third and short -- since ARod can move to short if Jeter
gets injured).
