Hi,
Just wondering as to what plans the Braves have for Jo-Jo Reyes.
Certainly the roster moves made this week could impact his immediate
future just as Hampton's newest injury might have.

Has anyone heard about whether Reyes will be a rotation starter for the
Braves, reliever, or will be sent down for another year of minor league
seasoning?

TIA

The Braves front office has repeatedly said that they have 7-8
potential starters going into 2008. Those are:

Smoltz
Hudson
James
Glavine
Jurrjens
Hampton
Bennett
Reyes

Obviously, Mike Hampton's bleeding hamstring makes him questionable
(again), but that still leaves some combination of Jurrjens, Bennett
and Reyes to fight it out for the fifth starter spot. I'd say
Jurrjens is dead on the favorite to win that spot and Bennett is
almost certainly bound for the pen to replace Lance Cormier as long
reliever/spot starter. Not sure where Reyes would fit in as of right
now, maybe the pen as well, maybe back in AAA to start and polish his
stuff.

If you're looking at this for fantasy purposes, you'd need to be in a
massively deep league to consider anyone after Glavine as a starter.
Jurrjens might be useful in keeper leagues.

Also keep in mind that management is still dealing looking for a
starting CF, a LH reliever, and maybe another starter. Latest rumors
out of Nashville suggest that one of the starters (James) could be
included for a CF package (DeJesus from KC is the last I heard.) It's
all rumormongering but the Braves have said ever since they got
Glavine that they are done with starters and feel they actually have a
surplus...

I saw DOB's discussion of James yesterday. James is an interesting one -
flashed some good stuff, had some success, but still not going too deep
into games. May be the most solidly tradeable asset we'd be willing to
give up right now, but I'd hate to trade a young arm who's cheap and
league average. James my not be great, but he's the kind of arm people
pay $8m for as free agents these days. And moreover, the team has at
least a decent idea of what they'e going to get from his rotation slot.

Still, if he can bring something useful...

I don't see anyone as untouchable except maybe Jordan Shaeffer. If
the return is right I'd flip anyone in the system. But with that
said, one or two years of DeJesus isn't enough for me to give up a
league average starter who is cheap and young. James put up pretty
much exactly the same season, on average, as Tom Glavine last year.
He's probably going to get a little better. He needs a third pitch
and a little more stamina but he's more valuable to me than a stop-gap
centerfielder, especially considering the feeble nature of Mike
Hampton.

One season of CF? I hate it. James is the youngest of the proven
starters. He's an OK 3rd starter and he's cheap. Maybe scouts are seeing
something what I can't see in his numbers, but I would hate that trade.

I wouldn't like James for DeJesus either, or any other one-year rental.
But I also don't see him as untouchable.

Of course he isn't untouchable. I just think he's worth more.
