Many of Gibbon's lineup changes don't make any sense. For example, with
the Jays facing a left-handed starting pitcher Gibbons will bench
Orlando Hudson for the much inferior hitting and fielding Fran
Menenchino. But who is currently tied for the lead in rbis and runs
scored on the Jays? Both Hudson and Vernon Wells have 38 rbis and 37
runs scored, the two most important offensive measurements. But have we
ever seen Wells benched for a left-handed batter in any game to date-NO.
And what is the point in having Menechino batting about .200 as DH
during games against lefty pitchers? This is stupid on Gibbon's part.
Gibbons and Ricciardi should bring up a right-handed bat from the farm
system immediately, even if the player is from A ball, as long as he is
hitting well and with some power. Looking at the Jays' farm rosters
there are several promising prospects. And often a rookie call-up will
hit well as it takes the opposition pitchers a while to find any
weaknesses.
Rookie shortstop Russ Adams is not a player who should be platooned
for John MacDonald just because the opposition team's starting pitcher
is a southpaw. Adams has one less rbi than Vernon Wells with fewer at-bats.
