UNION-TRIBUNE

6:55 p.m. December 14, 2007

Moving quickly to replace center fielder Mike Cameron, the Padres have
agreed to a trade that will bring them center fielder Jim Edmonds, a
37-year-old who has won eight Gold Gloves.

* Cameron breaks off negotiations with Padres

The Cardinals are to get single-A third baseman David Freese, a minor
leaguer. Cash will also be part of the deal, which could be made
official as soon as Saturday. In talks last month, the Padres said
they would be interested in Edmonds only if St. Louis helped to pay
for his $8 million salary.

Edmonds batted .252 with 15 doubles, 12 home runs and 53 RBI for St.
Louis last season. A left-handed hitter, he has batted .287 with 362
home runs in his career.

Negotiations between the Padres and free-agent Mike Cameron, their
regular center fielder the last two seasons, were called off today.

Seems to me this is half about Rasmus and half about Mozeliak making
his mark as GM.

I'm sorely disappointed by this.

Just to be clear, I'm no Terry "Goodbye and good riddance" Lomax, but
I'm not sorely disappointed either. If the Padres are lucky, he will
invigorate their offense significantly. He may also get injured again
and be a bust. His career is almost over, I'd be sorely disappointed if
it disintegrated in a Cardinal uniform.

I'll miss both Edmonds and Eck, it's like the end of an era. At this
point in his career, I understand the Edmonds deal though.

Great memories. I remember 2-3 years ago, before the steady steam of
injuries, Jimmy robbed HR's on consecutive nights. One of the catches
made the Top 50 Best Damn Plays Ever...a list including all sports.

I wondered then, and still do, if the theft of HR's by a player in
consecutive games had ever happened before. But to my knowledge, no
records of that sort exist.

The Cardinals looked OLD last year. It's time to move on, and if there
are prospects to pick up so much the better.

But like everyone else, I'll miss Edmonds - a lot - next season.

So who's the CF - Ankiel or Schumaker? If Skip can hit, he's the
lead-off man.

This helps make sense of the Barden pickup. I wonder what other deals Mo
is working on?

I probably will too, which is beside the point I was making.

Which reminds me, the guy I'm REALLY going to miss next year and scratch
my head over why, is Eckstein. There's your shocker right there.

No, not because he's a great leadoff man -- he's average at best.

I'll miss him every time I try to figure out what the
h-e-double-toothpicks Izturis is doing in the starting lineup, much less
on the roster. If Eck turns out to be as injury-prone as the Cardinals
think he will be, that will lessen the blow considerably, but I still
don't understand signing Cesar.

While I'm at it, the other guy I'm going to miss next year and scratch
my head as to why, is So Taguchi. Talk about a largely
un-commented-upon transaction. Why did we all of a sudden give up on
him? Again, he's not great or anything (he's not really a good
regular), but I never heard even one reason why we released him.

It certainly has happened before. In 1987 Eric Davis robbed Jack
Clark of HRs in two consecutive games. Both catches by Davis were
spectacular leaps to grab the ball as it went over the outfield wall.

(Within a week or so of losing those two HRs, Jack Clark lost yet
another one when he hit an HR early in a game that was called before
it became official).

I'm guessing there weren't a lot of deals to choose from.

This looks to me like something the agent screwed up. Like Scott Boras
messed up with Andy Benes, Jeff Weaver, and A-Rod, to name a few.

I've heard the plan is to play a mix of Izturis and Ryan. May the better
man win, and I'm hoping that Ryan is a clear winner.

Not a great player, but a solid one for most of his time here. I like
So, but he's 38 years old. I'd sort of wish the Cardinals would keep him
as an instructor, scout or something when the time comes.
