In reference to comments made yesterday about future of DBACKS...Jerry
DeAngelo was interviewed on Arizona local channel 3 station and
said..quote..We will be cutting our budget in half next year, calling up
more players from our farm teams and adding young blood to our team for
next year..unquote..How this will affect superstar players such as
...Johnson..Schilling and even Gonzo with millions of dollars in
salaries, I guess we will just have to wait and see...
I too would like to say Congrats Randy on your homer!!!!

Nooo, joo knooow, Hairy Decolangello, the manahing yeneral
pardner of the Arezonia Dominobats.

Last I heard, he was saying 2005 would be a very, very
different team from 2003's. The Republic (you probably saw
it) did a long piece on how the only two current players
whose contracts run that long are Gonzo and the Unit.
They won't be affected at all, except in that they will
be the Grand Old Men of the team. Maybe they can get
a couple of nameplated La-Z-Boys.

It's clear that Jerry's willing to rely on the farm system,
and he'll probably get huge benefits from trading veterans
for other peoples' minor-league stars.

A little-known side-effect of the last CBA was supposed to eliminate
compensatory draft picks for free agent signings (Billy Beane has lived
high on the hog with that feature for years). At any rate, the CBA
language could never be precisely agreed upon for changes to the draft
rules, so the International draft and the draft-pick compensation changes
never happened. The D-Backs will still get draft picks as compensation
for losing free agents.

For example, if Curt Schilling doesn't get traded before the 2004 season
starts, he's said he'll veto any mid-season trade, so if the D-Backs don't
trade him before the season starts, they'll get "nothing" for him if they
don't re-sign him after the season.

This is where things get tricky. If the D-Backs make a qualifying tender
offer to Schilling and he signs elsewhere (there are other rules involving
arbitration, etc.), they get at least a first-round pick for him.
Depending on how monster a season Schilling has in 2004, they could get
additional picks, including an additional supplemental first-rounder. The
A's had three first-round picks in the draft after they lost Jason Giambi
to the Yankees, thanks to draft-pick compensation.

At any rate, they don't have to trade their veterans to get good young
players in return. They just have to get draft picks.
