"December 7, 2006 - Orlando, FL – The Orioles today selected RHP
ALFREDO SIMON with the 5th pick of the Major League phase of the Rule
5 Draft, held today as part of baseball’s annual Winter Meetings.
Simon was then traded to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for CA
ADAM DONACHIE and cash.
Donachie, 22, was selected by the Phillies from Kansas City earlier in
the day in the Rule 5 Draft. He split the 2006 season between the
Royals’ Class A High Desert and AA Wichita affiliates, batting a
combined .247 with 8 home runs and 31 RBI in 91 games. Simon split
last season between AAA Fresno and Class A San Jose in the San
Francisco organization and went 2-10 with a 6.62 ERA in 28 games.
1B JOSH PHELPS was selected by the New York Yankees off the Orioles’
AAA Norfolk roster. Phelps was signed by the Orioles as a minor league
free agent on November 10.
The Orioles lost two players in the AAA Phase of the draft. The Texas
Rangers selected RHP KENDY BATISTA from the AA Bowie roster and
assigned him to their AAA Oklahoma affiliate. Batista was signed by
the Orioles as a minor league free agent on June 27 and played for
their Venezuelan Summer League team.
The Florida Marlins selected OF LORENZO SCOTT from the Bowie roster
and assigned him to AAA Albuquerque. Scott batted .258 with 4 home
runs, 32 RBI and 29 stolen bases in 113 games for Class A Delmarva
last season.
The Orioles also announced RHP KEVIN HART will be sent to the Chicago
Cubs to complete the trade in which they acquired OF FREDDIE BYNUM.
Bynum was acquired by the Orioles on Wednesday for a player to be
named later."
