The Lower Hudson Online is reporting Grady Little has been fired by the Dodgers and Torre has been hired as manager.

"The Los Angeles Dodgers have decided to fire manager Grady Little and replace him with former Yankees manager Joe Torre, The Journal News has learned.

Torre, 67, could be named manager as soon as tomorrow, according to two sources close to the situation. Don Mattingly is expected to accompany Torre to Los Angeles as his bench coach. Torre is also interested in hiring Kevin Long, his hitting coach with the Yankees.

The Dodgers were 82-80 this season under Little and were beset by clubhouse unrest. Owner Frank McCourt, a Boston native, decided Torre is best suited to quell that situation.

Torre turned down a one-year offer to remain as manager of the Yankees on Oct. 18. He had been with the Yankees 12 seasons, winning four World Series championships."

The Tigers traded two pretty good prospects for Edgar Renteria. He's signed through '08 with a player option for '09. He missed about 40 games, but put up slightly better numbers than Tejada last year.

So I guess this is what Tejada is worth. Maybe not even this much.

First big move by Atlanta's new GM, Frank Wren.

How many Yankees will follow Torre to Hollywood?
A Rod?
Rivera?
Posada?

The New York Post reported on its Web site last night that Torre had agreed in principle to a three-year, $14.5 million contract with the Dodgers, but a baseball official with knowledge of the search told the Associated Press that no deal was imminent. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the job was still open.

As of this writing, Torre has not signed on the dotted line.

Soon after Little resigned Tuesday, published reports said Torre and the Dodgers had already reached a deal, some claiming he had agreed in principle to a three-year contract worth $14.5 million.

``I've watched stuff in the last 72 hours that I can't believe I'm watching,'' Colletti said. ``I can tell you we do not have an agreement. I've seen more inaccuracy than I can ever remember.''

Still, it would be a surprise at this stage if Torre doesn't follow in the footsteps of Hall of Famers Walter Alston and Tom Lasorda in what would likely be the final chapter of his own Hall of Fame career.

And if/when Torre goes to Tinseltown, rumor has it that Don Mattingly would follow him. Mattingly's pissed he didn't get Girardi's job.

The Cardinals (unlike the Orioles) are the latest team to hire a young general manager. New GM John Mozeliak (formerly the assistant to Walt Jocketty) is 38...

The Rockies declined their $3.75 million option on LaTroy Hawkins...

The White Sox declined options for 2008 on lefthander Mike Myers and on outfielder Darin Erstad. Erstad has hit exactly 18 HRs in his last 1,656 PAs...

Wink

I expect Erstad or Tony Clark to be Orioles next season.

The Brewers hired former catcher Ted Simmons to be their bench coach. Ned Yost should take this a sign his job is on the line. Simmons is respected as one of the smarter men working in baseball. He was the Pirates GM from 91-93, but resigned after suffering a massive heart attack. Since then he's worked in director of scouting and minor league development positions for the Indians, Cardinals, and Padres.

He wasn't Yost's choice. Doug Melvin approached him on the suggestion of Jack Z(can't spell his last name) the Brewers Star director of scouting and main Draft Guru. Jack worked for Simmons in Pittsburgh.

Simmons by the way, should probably be in the Hall of Fame.

Dodgers Hire Torre

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Grady Little looks on as his team bats against C...
By JOHN NADEL, AP

LOS ANGELES —

Joe Torre was hired Thursday to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers, taking the job two weeks after walking away from the New York Yankees.

The winningest manager in postseason history, Torre moved from one storied franchise to another and got a three-year, $13 million contract. The Dodgers finished fourth in the NL West this season and have only one playoff victory since winning the 1988 World Series under Tom Lasorda.

"I'm so happy for him. I think his record speaks for itself," Lasorda said. "I think what he accomplished with the Yankees, he should have been able to control his destiny. We're happy that he's here _ very happy."

The 67-year-old Torre will be introduced at a news conference Monday at Dodger Stadium. He succeeds Grady Little, who resigned Tuesday after two seasons and with a year remaining on his contract.

Torre becomes the Dodgers' eighth manager since they moved west from his hometown of Brooklyn, where he rooted for the rival New York Giants.

"As a kid growing up, you didn't like them," Torre said on WFAN radio in New York less than an hour before the hiring was announced. "As a player, to me the Dodgers were the Yankees of the National League because ... you either loved them or you hated them."

Now, Torre joins the Dodgers for their 50th anniversary season in Los Angeles.

Torre guided the Yankees to four World Series championships from 1996-2000, and they made the playoffs in all 12 years he managed them. After New York was beaten in the first round by Cleveland last month, the Yankees offered him a one-year contract with a paycut.

Calling the performance incentives in the proposal "an insult," Torre turned it down. Torre was hired by the Dodgers on the same day the Yankees formally introduced Joe Girardi as their manager.

This week, the Dodgers acknowledged they talked to Girardi about potentially replacing Little.

Teams are generally directed to interview at least one minority candidate for open managerial jobs. The Dodgers were granted an exemption by commissioner Bud Selig, however, because of a strong track record on minority hirings.

Torre ranks eighth on baseball's career list with 2,067 victories. He also managed the New York Mets, St. Louis and Atlanta but won only one division title in the NL, in 1982 with the Braves.

"Few managers in the history of the game have accomplished what Joe has delivered," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said. "Throughout his career he has demonstrated the ability to turn a vision for success into results on the field and we welcome his passion and leadership. We have tremendous fans and they deserve no less."

Torre passed former Dodgers managers Leo Durocher (2,009) and Walter Alston (2,040) last season on the career wins list. He has 76 postseason victories.

Since Lasorda left during the 1996 season after suffering a heart attack, the Dodgers are 1-9 in three playoff appearances.

Torre completed a $19.2 million, three-year contract with the Yankees this season. He made $7.5 million this year _ the highest salary among major league managers _ and the Yankees offered $5 million for next year with an additional $3 million in performance bonuses.

"Joe Torre is one of the most respected men in the game of baseball," Dodgers owner Frank McCourt said. "As a player, a broadcaster, a manager and in his life off the field, Joe is a winner through and through."

The Dodgers entered last season as the clear-cut favorites to win the NL West, but after having the league's best record in mid-July, they lost 11 of their last 14 games to fall out of contention.

McCourt said on the season's last day that Little would return as manager next season. In resigning Tuesday, Little said he had been thinking about stepping down for some time due to personal reasons. He insisted it had nothing to do with reports that the Dodgers were talking to Torre.

During the late-season slide, problems surfaced between older and younger players on the Dodgers' roster.

"I think he's going to do a good job in the clubhouse because he's got great leadership abilities," Lasorda said. "He knows how to handle a ballclub."

Torre seems destined to follow Alston and Lasorda into the Hall of Fame.

"There's definitely a locker waiting for him in Cooperstown, that's for sure," Lasorda said. "I've known him for close to 30 years and we've been good friends.

I doubt Torre is a better manager than Grady Little, but sometimes a new manager signals a new effort by the front office. Dodgers have some good young talent and quality veteran pitchers. The NL West could move from the worst division in the league to the best next year.

Often teams respond to a new manager, even if there haven't been major upgrades in talent.

Yes. Still, I think there are at least 4 teams in the AL that are better than any of the teams in the NL.
