They'd have to go 29-37 the rest of the way to get there. Given that the
DBacks will definitely be losing at least one -- and maybe three or four --
of their top-producing hitters by the end of the month, that they're getting
zero offense at two other positions already, and that their current manager
has shown, from the ninth inning of his first game right on through the
eighth and ninth innings last night, that he has absolutely zero ability to
handle pitching effectively, I would say there's no reason whatsoever to
believe they could =possibly= reach sixty wins.

That'd be 13-60 (marking the start of the second half with that
eighth-inning disaster that followed the All-Star break). As ugly as that
looks, Pedrique would have to improve his winning percentage substantially
just to get to that mark. Hell, the one thing that recommended him for his
position (his familiarity with rookies and minor-leaguers in the
organization) has turned out to be meaningless, as he has shown no
willingness to play his young talent any more than absolutely necessary.
Unless the front office becomes proactive and begins a search for a
permanent replacement right now (Bud Black? Dave Righetti? Orel Hershiser?
Someone with current familiarity with west-coast ball and experience
handling pitching), the organization will be hard-pressed to reach =FIFTY=
wins.

Along with everything else, ballpark security and crowd-control has gone
south as the season has gone on. Went out last Thursday to watch Randy (and
pretty much =only= Randy) start the second-half, only to find that it was
absolutely impossible to focus on the game thanks to a couple dozen AARPers
drunk off their asses behind me and several dozen severe-ADHD-case
junior-high kids in front of (and behind and beside and overhead and
everywhere else all at once) me completely out of control. Went to three
different straw-hats complaining, all three of whom claimed they couldn't do
anything unless there was a physical confrontation or an interference with
play on the field.
Wasn't that way just a few short months ago. Not worth going out there
again.... not under these conditions (both on-field and in the stands).
