As usual tonight, I tuned to XM satellite radio so I could listen
in San Diego to Vin Scully do the first 3 innings of the game.
Also, as usual, I learned things about the PADRES from Vin
that the SD radio guys never discuss.
Tonight, Mr. Scully explained that Jake Peavy has bonded
with Greg Maddux, and been influenced by him.
Vin pointed out that Jake Peavy is from Alabama, grew up a
Braves fan, and idolized Maddux when he was winning 3 Cy
Youngs in a row.
Sounding as if it was all just off-the-cuff, Mr. Scully said that
Jake took his hero's advice, slowing down his pitching pace,
and thinking ahead on every pitch.... with obvious results.
Vin Scully does not name-drop, or tell you about the time he
takes to do interviews and pre-game preparation. Instead he
just quietly tells you what is happening, and why.
I've been listening to him for 40+ years and he still floors me.
The lead Padre radio guy (not Jerry Coleman who is partly
retired) prefers to (a) complain about the umpires (b)
name drop and (c) regale you with FASCINATING stories
about his days as a teenage hot dog vendor at Yankee
Stadium in the 1960s. Honest to God.
Dodgers fans, if you could hear this guy, you would get
down on your knees and give thanks for Charlie Steiner.

LA sports fans have been truly blessed with both Vin & Chick, without
doubt 2 of the best announcers in sports history.

I remember growing up in LA with Vinny calling the Dodgers, Dick Enberg and
Don Drysdale calling the Angels (with Enberg also calling the Rams and UCLA
basketball during the Wooden era) and Chick Hearn calling the Lakers.
I also want to give props to the Dodgers announcers and their postgame guys
on Fox. Martin clearly evaded the tag on the attempted steal at 3B and if it
had a Padre thrown out at 3rd on a call like that, you can bet Ted Leitner
would have been crying like a slapped bitch about what an injustice that had
been done. Instead, all the Dodger broadcasters essentially said that if the
throw beats the runner, the runner will be called out, end of story.

And that's essentially what Leitner & Co. said...
It looked like Martin got his hand in, but it was a "ball beat the runner"
out call.
In a karmic way, I suppose you could consider it as balancing the blown call
when Bocachica was called out at 2nd earlier in the game. *shrug* >> Stay informed about: Homage to Vin Scully |

A few weeks ago, the Padres were on the other end of a bad call in a
very similar situation, when Bocachica tried to steal third in (I
think) the bottom of the ninth against Seattle. I didn't hear how the
game broadcasters reacted, but the guys on the radio postgame show
were a lot harsher on Bocachica than they were on the ump. >> Stay informed about: Homage to Vin Scully |

That's why you can't sweat calls like that, as a fan or as a player. It
pisses you off for the moment but you know there have been some bad calls
that went your way. In the end you can only hope it evens out. Tough that
it happened on what could have been a deciding moment. I still don't think
Russell should have gone with only one out. I know the Dodgers are the kind
of team that have to manufacture runs but Russell is not Furcal or Pierre.
Fast ...but not the kind of guy who can usually get away with something like
that. And while he was safe..the throw beat him so he didn't "make it".

You'd rather have him trying to steal third with two outs? >> Stay informed about: Homage to Vin Scully |

Thanks for the balanced reporting, AG. You're right - umps calls tend to even
out so ya just gotta shrug it off and hope that the one obviously bad call
doesn't cost your team a game. I believe that, even then, what goes around comes
around.

Ichiro seems to carry good karma on the field at all times. Wish he were coming
here and, yep, the perfect fit in Petco.

Last time I checked, the rule was the runner had to beat the tag, not the
throw. He made it. He was just called out. >> Stay informed about: Homage to Vin Scully |

There is zero percentage in that. Even if he is called safe, with two outs
it matters so much less than 1 out that he shouldn't have ran. With one out
there are lots of ways to score from third that you can't from second. >> Stay informed about: Homage to Vin Scully |
