First of all, beginning with his start on May 30, he has been
incredible. He has never pitched quite this well before. There
was a time when someone could have asked why Greg Maddux
always looked like a AAA pitcher in the bigs.
Second, there is a mental factor. Pitchers don't always have
the same confidence in the bigs and as a consequence they locate
their pitchers differently. Hill has awesome control but actually
walked a ton of guys in Chicago. A big factor here is handling.
A good manager is really important and alas the Cubs don't have
one. In Hill's third start as a Cub, he gave up three runs in
six innings, his first decent outing - almost. Something to build on.
Except Dusty didn't give him a pat on the back. He brought him out
for the seventh. The first two runners reached, Hill got yanked,
the reliever let the runners score and suddenly the line reads
five runs in six innings.
You listen to Baker's comments about Hill this weekend and they
are completely derogatory.
