We've been hearing about it going on twelve years now... nothing has
changed.
The Pirates finished 12 out of 16 teams in ERA last year and this season
now they're minus their second best starter in Suppan (3.57 - 21 starts)
Within just they're division - the Astros were fifth in the NL and
they return Oswalt, Miller, Redding and have added Andy Pettitte. Even
if Carlos Hernandez isn't healthy after more than a year of rehabbing
the Pirates pitching doesn't have a prayer of equaling the Astros. The
Cubs were third in the NL, they return Wood, Prior, Zambrano and
Clement. Again, the Pirates couldn't equal this division rival in their
dreams.
The Pirates pitching after Wells is a bunch of question marks at best,
probably not even as likely to improve as the Brewers staff.
The Pirates are a few seasons at least away from being an average
pitching team - equaling most of the rest of the teams this season? Not
bloody likely.
If the Pirates ever plan on winning with pitching they better get
started on a plan to get there soon - because they haven't started yet.
