Jackets pull away in the 7th with Haniger's 3 run homer and get an
insurance run in the bottom of the 8th. Next up, the Bison of Lipscomb
in the winner's bracket game at 7 PM.

In earlier action, top seeded (and #8 nationally seeded) Uga(g)
Bullfrogs lose to #4 seed Lipscomb. A perfect day!

Jackets Prove It: Earn Win No. 40

Tech opens NCAA Tournament with 40th victory of 2008 season

May 31, 2008

by Jack Wilkinson - On a day of closure, sundown gave way to a
near-ideal opening night. A very good Friday, indeed, for a team in dire
need of one. By nightfall, Georgia Tech's magic number was 40. In every
sense, 40...and counting.

"At the start of the year, 40 wins was something we wouldn't dare to
reach," said David Duncan, the starter _ if not the winning pitcher _ in
Tech's 8-5 victory over Louisville in the first round of the NCAA
Regional at Foley Field. "At the start of the year, nobody gave us
credit _ the media, whoever. Forty wins just means a lot, with baseball
and everything off the field."

Forty wins means Tech, now 40-19, has its 20th 40-victory season. It
also has a Saturday night winners-bracket date with Lipscomb, which
silenced Foley Field with a 10-7 win over host Georgia. Forty also
carries a significance far beyond baseball.

"That was his number," Duncan said, holding up his right wrist. "That
was the whole thing behind it."

On his non-pitching wrist, Duncan wore a black plastic bracelet.
Everyone in the Tech baseball program wears one. It's a mourning band,
which reads: HUTTS #40 "PROVE IT"

ATHENS, Ga. In the opening game of the Athens Regional in the 2008 NCAA
Division I Baseball Championships on Friday, the fourth-seeded Lipscomb
Bisons upset top-seed and eighth national seed Georgia, 10-7.

"Wow. I don’t know where to start describing how proud I am of our
guys," Lipscomb head coach Jeff Forehand said. "Coming in here versus a
team like Georgia all you want is a chance at the end. I didn’t know how
to prepare for a regional because we have never been to a regional. I
felt confident in our team after getting out of the first inning and
battling back and scoring some runs. We really settled in, our pitching
got better, we kept our composure and were able to battle back and win
this huge game."

With the win, Lipscomb (33-2Cool advances in the winner’s bracket of the
Athens Regional and will face the winner of game two between second seed
Georgia Tech and third seed Louisville Saturday at 7 p.m. ET. Georgia
(35-22-1) falls to the loser’s bracket and will face the loser of game
two Saturday at 3 p.m.
