Detroit -- The Braves don't know if left-hander Mike Hampton will be able
to make his scheduled start Sunday against the White Sox in Chicago.
Hampton was hit on the left biceps by a line drive Tuesday night against
the Detroit Tigers and his arm is badly bruised.
"There is a lot of blood in there," Braves manager Bobby Cox said. "If we
can get that out, I think he'll be able to pitch."
The injury came on the last pitch of the seventh inning, with Hampton
pouncing on the ball after it hit him and throwing out Carlos Guillen at
first base.
Hampton (1-6) had been given a 3-0 lead, but he allowed the Tigers to tie
the game in the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Brandon Inge. The
Braves won 4-3 in the 10th.
If Hampton can't pitch Sunday, Cox said he will start Travis Smith. The
right-hander pitched four innings in Wednesday night's rain-interrupted
loss to Detroit, giving up two home runs. Smith (0-2) has allowed five
homers in 17 innings since being called up from Class AAA Richmond.
Thomson on two days rest
John Thomson, who threw just 25 pitches Wednesday night, will start
against the White Sox on Saturday night.
The right-hander didn't return after the delay of 2 hours and 24 minutes
in the second inning. The Tigers won 4-2 and Thomson was charged with the
loss because of a first-inning run.
The defeat snapped a three-game winning streak for Thomson, who is 5-3
with a 3.86 ERA.
Capellan impressive
The Braves may not be able to keep Jose Capellan in the minors all
season. The promising right-hander with the 100-mph fastball has struck
out 89 in 62 2/3 innings.
After going 5-1 with a 1.94 ERA at Class A Myrtle Beach, Capellan is 1-1
with a 3.31 ERA at AA Greenville.
Capellan, 23, struck out 10 and walked none in six scoreless innings
against Mobile on Wednesday night, allowing four hits. He has 27
strikeouts and three walks in 16 1/3 innings with Greenville.
"When you throw like that, you can pitch anywhere," said Cox, who
considered giving Capellan a spot in the bullpen this spring.

"It was fun. Everybody was kind of shocked. It was great to strike
[Barry Bonds] out. That's what you pitch for, pitching against Hall of
Famers, guys like that, and pitching in big games. That's when I'm
having the most fun." - Horacio Ramirez
