He's flying to meet with his doctor to assess the severity.

Do you know whether the Braves have insurance on the rest of the
contract? For some reason this is always hard to find out, but I do
think they received something for last year, triggered by the length
of the stay on the DL, I don't know how much.

The Braves' beat writer indicated they collected insurance on him last year,
but they won't disclose how much. I presume they're in the same situation
this year. I think his contract was signed before insurance companies
started limiting coverage to three years. Actually, I think his contract was
signed before the invention of insurance, the internet, and most rudimentary
tools.

DOB in the AJC Braves blog says " a reliable source" told him that
rumor that Braves have no insurance on Hampton is wrong. No
elaboration on how much insurance or how coverage kicks in.

The deals Hampton and Neagle got from Colorado are usually referenced,
along with Kevin Brown's Dodger contract, as the deals that led to the
"no more than three years" rule for insurance coverage.

Probably the Dreifort deal too. Two GMs made 4 bad deals and that's that
for insurance.

I wish they would announce how much it will be. It probably would have
been enough to pay Glavine, if we had known in advance. Now, I suppose
they best they could do would be to use some of the money to extend
Smoltz, and maybe keep an eye on the bats at first that become
available.

It's a different tendon that tore, right? How do you tear something
new when you're on the DL all year? I hope this is the last time we
take on anyone who has pitched any length of time in Colorado.

Are they saying that the carriers won't write policies for more than
three years total on a player or just that they won't issue a single
policy with a term of more than three years?

I think they won't insure any more than the first three years of any given
contract. Now, if a player plays through a three year deal and then signs
another, i believe they'll commit to that. But if he signs, say, a 4 year
deal, they won't agree in advance to insure any more than the first three
years of it.

If there was no insurance and he were to play an entire season in 2008 --
his last on this contract (I believe) -- lets say 30 starts: that would
work out to about $500,000 a start since we picked him up. Yowza

Hopefully insurance is taking a big bite out of that!
