As unlikely as that sounds, it is at least possible, but I don't see it
happening. The Braves are going to need to some good starting pitching next
season, and if Hampton actually finishes strong and wins a few games, he
could fit that description. However, Hampton drove Bobby Cox crazy earlier
this season with his unreliability, and I doubt that Bobby wants to go
through that again. For another thing, Hampton will probably be looking for
a good contract, and the one the Braves would offer would probably be filled
with incentive clauses. Hampton needs to find a stupid GM who willl give
him a guaranteed contract. >> Stay informed about: Hampton WINS! |

He won't be back in Atlanta. Period. For Atlanta to sign him one of
two things would have to occur. Either 1) the Braves would have to
pay him 80% of his current contract (per the CBA) or 2) Hampton would
have to get to May 1 without a contract and then resign with the
Braves. Not going to happen.

I thought those rules had been changed. Thought Braves could not
offer arbitration and then still offer a lesser contract. This came
in part from the Maddux situation. Not sure I am correct about this,
but I had heard something along these lines. Can anyone verify?

The May 1 date restriction was definitely eliminated in the last CBA. I
believe the 80% rule only applies to players who are offered arbitration,
although I wouldn't swear to it. For those of you who want to read the
entire text of the CBA, it is here:

Fair enough. I'll raise my Hampton-resigns-with-Atlanta probability
to 0.001%.
