Following up on Dom's trip down memory lane...
One of my treasured souvenirs is a game program from an August 1978
home game between the Padres an d the "Big Red Machine".
EIGHT (

future Hall of Famers played or managed in that one game.
Here is the list:

Your Game Summary
======================
* FIRST Inning (Reds)
Pete Rose led off the game with a double, and advanced on
consecutive sac flies by Ken Griffy Sr, and Joe Morgan. 1-0
Cincinnatti.
* 1ST Inning (Padres)
Gene Richards greeted Seaver with a double to left. Ozzie
Smith laid down a bunt, and was safe when Seaver fumbled
the ball. After Oscar Gamble struck out, Dave Winfield drove
in Richards with a single to center and Ozzie went to 3rd. He
scored on Fernando Gonzales' sac fly. (Padres 2, Reds 1)
Both starters settled down and it was still a 2-1 game going to
the home half of the 5th.
* 5TH Inning (Padres)
Gene Richards reached on a swinging bunt, beating Seaver's
throw. Richards stole 2nd. But when Ozzie hit a slow roller,
Seaver pounced on it and threw Gene out at 3rd. Ozzie safe
on fielder's choice. After a ground out, Dave Winfield lined
another single to center to score Ozzie. (Padres 3, Reds 1)
--> The Reds then got a rally going in the 6th inning which featured
what is the clear-cut PLAY OF THE DAY.
* Pete Rose reached on an error by 1st baseman Derrell Thomas.
Ken Griffey singled him to 3rd, and the go-ahead run came to the
plate. After Joe Morgan's routine fly-out, George Foster hit a fly to
medium-deep right field.
Gene Richards backed up then ran forward to catch the ball and
fired a bullet toward the plate as "Charley Hustle" tagged up and
sprinted Home.
All eyes were on the throw to the plate.... when SUDDENLY pitcher
Gaylord Perry cut off the throw, as he saw Ken Griffey tag and head
to 2nd. Gaylord gunned the ball to Ozzie Smith and Griffey Sr. was
out from here........to there.
That ended the 6th with the familiar, "9-1-6" double play! Gaylord
conceded the one run to stop a possible big inning. Padres 3,
Reds 2
* Padres 7th inning. Tom Seaver committed his SECOND error of
the day, and again it was Ozzie Smith's footspeed that forced the
miscue. Ozzie ended up on 2nd, then took 3rd on a wild pitch. He
scored on Oscar Gamble's sac fly. Padres 4, Reds 2.
* The End Game ..... Rollie Fingers came out of the Bullpen to work
a 2-Inning save. He struck out the side in the 9th inning, fanning Dan
Driessen, Dave Conception and Cesar Geronimo to close it out.
FINAL SCORE: Padres 4, Reds 2
This was one of the pivotal games that later won the Cy Young for
Gaylord Perry, as he took 9 of his last 10 decisions. His heady
6th-inning play in the field that night was absolutely brilliant.
That's the way it was, Padre fans.... Ozzie, Winfield, Gaylord and
Rollie.... vs Tom Seaver, Johnny Bench, Joe Morgan and Sparky.
" $ 4.25 "
--> According to the seating chart in my 1978 program the Best
seat in the House that night cost $4.25. That's not a misprint,
it was $4.25.
